Test #3 Department of Civil Engin San Diego State University CIVE 444, Fall 2011 2 December 2011 Open Book Test Work One Problem Per Sheet of Engineering Paper 1. (30) The American Falls Dam on the Snake River in south central Idaho has a penstock, 0.8 meter in diameter and 5 kilometers in length (friction factor of 0.016), that provides water from the dam, with an average temperature of 10° C, to an impulse turbine located downstream in the American Falls power plant. ‘The average upstream reservoir surface elevation is 600 meters above the turbine jet, which is 12.0 cm in diameter. The turbine is 90% efficient and has an angular speed of 720 RPM. Assume ideal conditions for the bucket (Viucet = V/2). (@) (15) Determine the power produced by the turbine. (b) (15) Determine the diameter of the turbine wheel. 2. (20) The town of Frenchglen in southeastern Oregon has hired your engineering company to install a centrifugal pump to transfer water from its local reservoir to the town’s water tank at a flow rate of 0.5 ft'/s as shown in the diagram below. The diameter of both the suction and discharge pipes is 4 inches and the system has a K value, for both major and minor losses, of 20; According to the pump manufacturer specifications, at this flow rate the net positive suction head is 15 feet. Water temperature during the hot summer months in southeastern Oregon is normally about 80°F and you can assume an atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psia, You have been assigned the task of determining the maximum height the pump can be located above the reservoir water surface without cavitation occurring. 3. (25) A new power plant is to be constructed on the Gunnison River in west central Colorado. The plant will be supplied by a mountain lake with an effective head of 122 meters and a discharge rate of 1,200 ft'/s. The draft head (location) of the turbines is to be six (6) feet above the tailrace. Turbines to be used must be identical with a minimum of 86% efficiency. ‘The speed of the turbines is to be 600 RPM. (2) (05) Select the type of turbine that is to be used. (b) (10) Specify the number of turbines needed to achieve maximum power from the system. (©) (10) Determine the size of the turbines to be used. 4. (25) In the system shown below, water is being pumped from a man-made pond just Outside of Rosedale, Mississippi into the Mississippi River. The surface of the pond is 10 meters below the level of the river located behind the levee built by the Corps of Engineers. What will be the discharge if the pump installed has the characteristics shown in the provided performance curve? The total pipe length is 1,350 meters with a diameter of 50 centimeters. ‘The pipe has a friction factor of 0.018 and all minor losses must be considered. All bends have an 1/d of 1.0.
