24. FESTAL MATINS – SATURDAY OF THE SOULS – BEFORE MEATFARE

A Memorial Service - Mnemosinon (Greek) or Panikhida (Russian) is a Liturgical
observance in honour of the Departed Faithful souls, which is served in
the Eastern Orthodox Church.
The Prayers for the Reposed comforts those who are still Struggling in this
existence, and reminds us of our mortality and the brevity of this
preparatory period before Eternity.
Consequently, Memorial Services have an air of penitence and tend to be
served more frequently during the four major Fasting Seasons of Great
Lent, Advent - before the Nativity of Christ, the Apostles’ Fast and the
Dormition Fast.

Memorial Services for individuals often are held at their graveside, but if it is a
General Commemoration of all Departed souls of a Parish or if the person’s
gravesite is far away, Memorial Services are conducted before a small
table upon which is an upright Cross, a Holy Icon of Theotokos and St
John the Beloved Apostle, Evangelist and Theologian, as well as lit
candles. Every sin

No readings are assigned to Sunday because it is the Day of our Lord’s
Resurrection rather than Memorial Day, which is usually on Saturdays –
the Sabbath Day of Rest.
Koliva – boiled wheat flavoured and sweetened with sugar, spices, raisins,
sultanas, seeds, nuts, pomegranates and parsley – is prepared beforehand
and brought to Church before the beginning of our Holy Services of
Vespers or Matins and placed on a table on the Soleas with a Holy Icon
and candles.
Lists of names of our Reposed family and friends are given to the Priest well
before the Holy Services begin, to be included in his Prayers for the
Departed souls in each of the Holy Services.
(General) Memorial Services are served on numerous Saturdays of the Soul,
throughout the year, and there are also special Propers (particular
Liturgical sections) during Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy:

look into the graves: Where is the
glory? Where is the beauty of our
form? Where is the tongue that
spoke so well? Where is the brow,
and where is the eye? All are but
dust and shadow. Therefore, O
Saviour, spare us all!
Praise Him with the sound of the
trumpet; praise Him with lute and
harp.
Why is mankind deceived into
boasting, and why is he troubled for
no purpose, since he is made of
earth and will soon return to it?
Why not reflect on the fact that he is
made from earth, and will end in
rotten putrefaction? So if we
humans are clay, why are we so
attached to the earth? And if we are
planted together with Christ, why
not run to Him, and leave behind
this mortal and fleeting life, and
aspire rather to the Life
Incorruptible? Christ is this Life,
and the Illumintion of our souls.
