ASTM STANDARDS ON DISC

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS

I. System Requirements

1. PC with the Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating system and a CD-ROM


drive.

2. A Java-compatible web browser installed. Either of:


a. Netscape Communicator version 4.0 or newer, or
b. Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or newer

All Java and JavaScript functionalities should be enabled and the


browser should be set to run in the "online" mode.

For your convenience, Netscape Communicator 4.61 has been included


on the disc if you do not have a Java-compatible browser. (See
installation instructions below, if necessary.)

3. Adobe Acrobat Reader, version 3.0 or newer

For your convenience, Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 has been included on
the disc if you do not have a recent version of Acrobat Reader.
(See installation instructions below, if necessary.)

II. Usage Instructions

Launching the ASTM Standards on Disc software:

1. Insert the ASTM Standards on Disc CD into your PC's CD-ROM drive.

2. Using either the "My Computer" tool or your Windows Explorer, double-
click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive.

3. Double-click the "start.bat" file icon to launch the Standards on


Disc software.

Using the ASTM Standards on Disc software:

4. From the opening page, you will have a choice to view standards
texts in either of two different methods.

a. Select "Contents" to view a full list of designations and titles


for all standards contained in this volume. Titles contain links
to both scope pages and the full texts of standard documents.

b. Select "Search for individual standards by designation or keyword"


to search the titles and scopes of standards contained on this
volume by either ASTM designation (ex. "A100") or keywords
(ex. "steel AND copper").
5. From either the Contents page or the results of a search query, you
will have a list of designations and titles for particular standards.
You may view standards summary pages by clicking on a standard's
title, or access the full text of the document (in PDF format)
through the "Full Text" link on the same line.

III. Installing Netscape Communicator 4.61 (if necessary)

NOTE: It is only necessary to install Netscape if you do not already


have a Java-compatible web browser already installed on your system.
If you have Netscape version 4.0 or newer or Internet Explorer version
4.0 or newer, you do not need to install this version of Netscape.

1. Insert the ASTM Standard on Disc CD into your PC's CD-ROM drive.

2. Using either the "My Computer" tool or your Windows Explorer, double-
click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive.

3. Double-click the "cc32e461.exe" file icon to begin installation of


Netscape 4.61 on your system.

4. From here, Netscape will install itself on your PC. You will be
periodically prompted to input system information--in most cases,
accepting the default settings will work fine.

IV. Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 (if necessary)

NOTE: It is only necessary to install Acrobat Reader if you do not


already have a version of Acrobat Reader (3.0 or newer) already
installed on your system. If you already have a version on your
system, you do not need to install this version of Acrobat Reader

1. Insert the ASTM Standard on Disc CD into your PC's CD-ROM drive.

2. Using either the "My Computer" tool or your Windows Explorer, double-
click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive.

3. Double-click the "ar40eng.exe" file icon to begin installation of


Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 on your system.

4. From here, Acrobat Reader will install itself on your PC. You will
be periodically prompted to input system information--in most cases,
accepting the default settings will work fine.
