REGARDING PRECAST PILE DRIVING

INFORMATION ON PILE DRIVING EQUIPMENT:

MAKE & MODEL: STARKE,HD50

IMPACT PISTON WEIGHT: 5000 kg.
ENERGY PER BLOW: 80 TO 180 kN-m.

CONTROLING SYSTEM FOR ENERGY PER BLOW:

The fuel pump determines the energy per blow and thus the drop height of the piston. The fuel pump
has four settings, which is controlled by gear.

Power Per Stroke

Position of Gear Free Fall Height (m)
(kN.m)
Position 04 160 to 180 Min. Max.

Check for Driving Stress

Formula for use with Diesel Hammer, STARKE HD50:
2
Ru= [12efEn/ (s+0.5(C1+C2+C3)] x [(Wr+e Wp) / (Wr+Wp)] ---------(I)

Ru = ultimate carrying capacity of pile (ultimate resistance to driving) TO BE CALCULATED

Wr= weight of falling mass 11240.45 lb

En=Rated energy per blow 99570.89

ef= hammer efficiency 100.00 %

Wp= weight of pile 11381.01

L = length of pile 393.60 inches.

e = coefficient of restitution * 0.40
*[Pile Top Covered by steel plate during driving.]
s = set value(minimum penetration for each blow) 0.25 inches.
C1= temporary compression allowance for pile head and cap 0.10

C2= temporary compression of pile, in= Ru L/ AE 2.890E-07 X Ru

C3= temporary compression allowance for quake of ground 0.10

A= average cross section of pile 313.71 Sq.inches

E= modulus of elasticity for pile material=57000√ f’c 4341559.45 psi

So, placing the values in equation -I,

8.343E-08 X Ru 2 + 0.35 Ru -689895.2106 = 0
Solving the equation above:
Ru = 1461784.14 lbs
= 6502598.488 N
Stress on concrete during driving(Ru/A) = 32.11 MPa HENCE OK!!
COMMENTS: 32.11 MPa <40 MPa. Hence, ok. 0.8fc' has been considered as safe , considering a F.O.S. Furthermore,it is commonly to
limit pile set between 25mm/10 blows and 50mm/10 blows. The reason of the provision for lower limit of set value of 25mm/10 blows
is to avoid possible damage at pile toe owing to compressive stress reflected at the bottom of pile. The upper limit of 50mm/10 blows is
established principally to avoid very heavy hammer impacting at pile head so that the pile head may be damaged owing to excessive
compressive stress. These limitations are believed to be applied originally to precast concrete piles.

Hence, Pile shall be driven keeping the Pile Driver at 3rd Gear (135 kN.m), keeping a free fall height of 2.6
m.
