Manual recomandat: Iulian Cănănău, English for Sports Students, Ed. Fundaţiei România de Mâine,
Bucureşti, 2001
Prezentarea cursului/Rezumatul cursului: This practical English course is designed as an ESP course
(English for Specific Purposes) and its main purpose is to make students familiar with the basic
specialized vocabulary necessary in the sports field. The practical handbook used during the
seminars – English for Sports Students – is divided into 8 Units, each consisting of texts about the
major sport events and competitions, vocabulary exercises and grammar exercises. The grammatical
elements that are to be reviewed in this year of study are: verbal tenses, adverbs – degrees of
comparison, Gerund and Participles and modal verbs. The study of sports related vocabulary is
focused on assimilating a considerable number of terms designating names of sports, sports events
and International Sports Organizations. Each Unit contains an exercise of Comprehension Check and
basic information about the grammatical element specific to that Unit. Students will be encouraged
to use the new vocabulary in contexts of their own and to practise their conversational skills in
artificially created situational contexts (Role playing: interviewing an athlete, commenting live on a
football match, presenting the Sports Flash News, etc.).
Considering the limited period of time allocated to this English course (1 semester), only the first 5
Units of the above mentioned handbook are obligatory for the final exam, the rest of the Units
being optional.
