Those who received honorary degrees are as follows:

The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Rowan Douglas Williams M.A.,
F.B.A. Lord Archbishop of Canterbury and Primate of All England has written
a number of books on the history of theology and spirituality and published
collections of articles and sermons, as well as two books of poetry. He has
been involved in various commissions on theology and theological education.

Stephen Daldry CBE has enjoyed a prolific theatre and film career, including

his direction of the multi-award winning production of J.B Priestley’s An
Inspector Calls in London, Broadway and worldwide. His first feature film,
Billy Elliot , brought him global attention. Released in 2000, it received more
than 40 awards around the world, amongst them three Academy Award
nominations including Best Director. He has since adapted this into a
musical, written by Lee Hall with music by Elton John. Stephen’s film The
Hours received nine Oscar nominations, eleven BAFTA nominations, Best
Picture at the Golden Globes and an Oscar for Nicole Kidman. Stephen
became a C.B.E. in 2004.

Shami Chakrabarti is the Director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil
Liberties). As such she has written, spoken and been broadcast widely on the
importance of the post-war human rights framework as an essential
component of democratic society. She was recently appointed a Governor of
the London School of Economics and sits on the Advisory Board of the British
Institute of Human Rights and the Executive Committee of the Administrative
Law Bar Association.

Dr Bernadette Porter CBE has enjoyed a long relationship with Roehampton


University. Once a student, Dr Porter joined the Education Faculty at
Roehampton as a teacher, and was appointed as Principal of Digby Stuart
College in 1989. She became increasingly involved in the project to create
Roehampton as a University in its own right, becoming Pro-Rector in 1995,
Senior Pro-Rector in 1997 and Rector and Chief Executive in 1999. Whilst
university status was achieved on January 1, 2000, Dr Porter led the
institution for another four years, retiring in 2004. She was appointed CBE in
the New Years Honours list of 2005 for her services to Higher Education.

Dr Peter Weston began teaching in 1962, becoming Head of English in a


comprehensive school in Berkshire before joining Southlands College in 1970
as a lecturer. In 1980 he was appointed Head of English of the four
Roehampton colleges, leading the second largest department in the
institution. In 1986, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Arts &
Humanities, and later made proposals which led to the adoption of a modular
and semester-based curriculum in 1992-95, which continue at Roehampton to
this day. Peter led the group which managed the application process which
achieved taught and research degree awarding powers for Roehampton,
granted in 1997. He retired in 2005 as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

Julian Filochowski has been awarded an OBE and a CMG for services to
international development. He is a director of the Tablet Publishing Company
and he is currently working as an international development consultant on
assignment in Ethiopia with ActionAid. Under Julian’s leadership Catholic
Agency for Overseas Development pioneered the UK NGO response to the
global HIV/AIDS pandemic which led to education, training, awareness
raising, prevention and care programmes across five continents under the
auspices of an international commission on HIV/AIDS which Julian chaired for

fifteen years. He also pioneered interfaith collaboration between CAFOD and
the Muslim community in Britain, visibly working in partnership with Islamic
Relief in Afghanistan, Chechnya, Bosnia and Kosovo.
