INTRODUCTION

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, my name is Mrs. Curlen Martin Williams, I am a final

year student at Costaatt, and this is my colleague (Ms.Anthea Julien). If you all would permit us a

few minutes of your time, we would like to introduce our teaching plan, which focuses on the

promotion of healthy snack for toddlers and preschoolers. We do believe that this topic would be

quite beneficial and informative for parents who are unaware of the dangers of eating unhealthy

snack. Therefore, at the end of this teaching session we hope that you will be able to have a better

understanding of the term nutrients, and healthy snack, As well as, list 3 effects of poor eating

habits of preschooler and school-aged children. Lastly, identify 3 ways the parent can make foods

interesting. This session is intended to be interactive and your undivided attention and participation

is encouraged.

OF LA BREA HEALTH CENTRE 15
MANAGEMENT PLAN (24/02/2016)

OBJECTIVE I

Define the term Nutrients

 Nutrients are important substances in food that are utilized by the body for energy

production, growth, reproduction and repairs of tissues. The human body needs six specific

nutrients for healthy body performance.

OBJECTVE II

Define the term healthy snacks.

 Healthy snacks are natural light meal that are rich in micro nutrient and low in refined sugar

and salt. These snacks include carrot, apple, banana, watermelon, and pawpaw, which

provide toddlers and pre-schooler with the energy.

MANAGEMENT PLAN (24/02/2016)

OBJECTIVE III

State the importance of healthy snacking

Many parents do not realize that by choosing simple healthy snacks for their pre-schoolers can

have an incredible impact on the rest of their lives. Children health are the obvious advantage of

getting better nutrition on a daily basis, just by indulging in healthy snacking but the benefits

extends beyond current physical development and well into adulthood. Recognizing the

importance of healthy snacks for kids today, creates a foundation upon which long-term eating

habits are built.

OBJECTIVE IV

Describe 3 effects of poor eating habits of preschoolers and school-aged children.

 Dental health-prolonged exposure of teeth to sticky food and liquid are the leading cause

of tooth decay. Young children who are allowed to indiscriminately eat or drink throughout

the day, are likely to expose their teeth to carbohydrate longer, which encourage plaque

built up and tooth decay. Crunchy foods such as carrot sticks and apple slices are good

choices for snack because it does not stick to their tooth.

OF LA BREA HEALTH CENTRE 17
MANAGEMENT PLAN (24/02/2016)

 Constipation - having a diet low in fiber and water can lead to constipation in children.

Hard and dry stool can cause painful bowel movements; it is a common problem of young

children. Diet providing adequate total fiber for toddler and preschoolers guard against

constipation, these include whole grain, fruit and water.

 Obesity- having a poor diet can lead to serious problems for overweight children such as

diabetes and hypertension. Unhealthy fats in foods should such as cookies, soda, chips and

fried chicken should be replaced by healthy fats such as olive oil, fish and fruits.

OF LA BREA HEALTH CENTRE 18
MANAGEMENT PLAN (24/02/2016)

OBJECTIVE V

Identify 4 ways the parent can make foods interesting to toddlers and preschoolers.

 Provide nutritious food, and let child choose which ones, and how much they will eat.

 Make healthy snacks like grapes, apples, berries even celery and broccoli into fruit punch

or milk shakes.

 Get the kids involved in meal planning and preparation. For example, when baking banana

bread, children become more eager to eat.

 Introduce new food in a variety of color which will catch their attention.

EVALUATION

1) Can someone define the term nutrients?

2) Can someone define the term healthy snack?

3) Can someone state the importance of healthy snacking?

4) Can anyone describe 2 effects of poor eating habit in toddlers and preschoolers?

5) Can anyone identify 3 ways parent can make foods interesting for toddlers and

preschoolers?
