Introduction:
I. Hasn’t everyone seen an episode of the Brady Bunch? With the perfect blended family-
same number of girls and boys getting along beautifully? Then, later in the show came
Cousin Oliver. He was slightly out of place- but still loved by the family. Well, in my
family, I am Cousin Oliver. My parents blended a family of two boys and two girls, and
later decided that to make their family complete, I should join the cast.
II. During this speech, I will provide you with clear examples of how my life is completely
family oriented. My background, my life choices, and my personality are all factors that
are completely influenced by my passion for my family.
Body:
II. From my background, it will be clear that my family is a strong and connected group that
has influenced my life choices.
A. I am a Christian.
1. Since I was a baby I was raised in church.
2. My parents and siblings have provided examples for me to live by since
childhood.
B. I have a strong desire for family relations and children.
1. I am currently a student at IUPUI majoring in Psychology.
2. I hope to be a marriage and family therapist with the knowledge to help
other families in need.
C. I desire a family of my own.
1. Because of my positive outlook on married and family life, I have a
strong desire to be a wife and a mother.
2. I know that once I am able to, I want to be a stay at home mom. This is
one of my goals in life.
III. Finally, I believe that my personality is a product of my family- both positively and
negatively.
A. First, I believe some of my positive attributes come from my family’s influence.
1. I have a strong sense of humor- mostly inherited from dad.
2. I am a passionate and committed person- influenced from my sister
Kim, who is an artist and teacher.
3. I am confident- I believe I received this from my mom who is never
ashamed to do the right thing.
B. I also have negative characteristics that I have learned from my family.
1. I am sometimes too passive- in a large family it is easy to go with the
flow, so now sometimes I see myself not being as assertive in situations
as I should be.
2. I can be sarcastic- inherited mainly from the men in my life.
3. I am a bit of a perfectionist- this comes from the women in my life
who, like me, prefer everything “just so”.
Conclusion:
II. Now that I have shared with you the components of my family and the strong influence
they have provided me, I hope you can see how I would not be the same without them.
My background, my life choices, and my personality all illustrate my devotion and
passion I have for my family.
