Cortes clinches 1st MMK Award

The Municipality of Cortes proclaimed the 1st Grand Winner of 2016 Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK)
National Search for Outstanding Coastal Community at Malacañang Palace last March 7, 2017.

Mayor William M. Angos, CPA received the award given by no less than President Rodrigo R. Duterte with
Agriculture Undersecretary Manny Piñol who recognized the contribution of coastal communities in protecting and
conserving the ocean.

A worth of 20 million fisheries livelihood, trophy, plaque and certificate were given to Cortes on its initiative in
protecting and developing municipal waters and uplifting the livelihood of the fisherfolk constituents. Cortes bested 52
coastal cities and municipalities and declared the 2016 MMK Grand Winner. Among the winners Palompom, Leyte;
1st runner up and Calatagan, Batangas; 2nd runner up.

The winners were chosen based on MMK program’s four general criteria: (1) absence of illegal fishing and observance
of fishing closed season, (2) establishment of protected marine sanctuary, (3) clean coastal waters without domestic and
industrial wastes and, (4) effective mangrove protection and rehabilitation program.

The Search of Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan aimed to recognized the outstanding initiatives and contributions of
coastal municipalities or cities to sustainable fisheries development
