EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

BOARD CALENDAR OF EVENTS

TEEN COUNCIL
Starting its second year, the DCPL teen council is comprised of dedicated high school students
who advise DC Public Library on how to better engage with a teen audience. While focusing on
education and leadership, members write blog posts, liaise with patrons at libraries, and
provide tech support. Their experience will ultimately culminate in designing and implementing
teen programming. Participating libraries include: Mount Pleasant, Benning, Petworth, West
End, Bellevue, Woodridge, Northeast and Tenley.

DC 1968: EVOLUTIONS AND LEGACIES


DCPL’s Special Collections department will be debuting Evolutions and Legacies, an online
exhibition of stories of Dr. King’s activism in D.C., by local historian Dr. Marya McQuirter and
Derek Gray, DCPL Special Collections Archivist.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH


DC Public Library proudly celebrates Black History Month during February with author talks,
lectures, arts and crafts, and story times. Visit dclibrary.org/blackhistory for a full listing of
events and online resources.

TAX ASSISTANCE AT DC PUBLIC LIBRARY


Beginning February 1, AARP will provide free, high-quality tax assistance to low-income
individuals and families in the D.C. area. Assistance includes resolving outstanding issues,
preparing amended returns, and preparing returns for prior years. Participating libraries
include: Anacostia, Bellevue (William O. Lockridge), Deanwood, Georgetown, Lamond-Riggs,
Petworth, Shaw (Watha T. Daniel), Southwest, and Woodridge.

CFA MEETING FOR CAPITOL VIEW LIBRARY
DCPL will present the exterior Capitol View Library designs before the Commission of Fine
Arts.

AUTHOR TALK: DR. DANIEL L. HAULMAN


In celebration of Black History month, Dr. Daniel L. Haulman, an historian with the Air Force
Historical Research Agency, discusses his book The Tuskegee Airmen Chronology: A Detailed
Timeline of the Red Tails and Other Black Pilots of World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were
virtually ignored in American military history for decades but have since become famous,
culminating in early 2007 with the awarding of the Congressional Gold Medal.

Celebrate Black History Month with children's author Karen Deans as she gives a presentation
supporting her book: Swing Sisters: The Story of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm. The
book honors courageous musicians who chipped away at racist and sexist barriers.

DCPL staff will testify before the City Council’s Committee on Education about DCPL’s

WOMENS HISTORY MONTH


Women's History Month is a time to celebrate women's historical and contemporary
contributions to society and culture. During the month of March, DC Public Library will host
programs to honor these contributions and to provide enriching opportunities to explore
women's issues.

AUTHOR TALK: JUNOT DIAZ


Junot Díaz, Pulitzer Prize winner and National Book Award finalist, is making his first foray into
children’s writing with Islandborn. The picture book celebrates cultural diversity in the U.S. and
poses questions about identity and belonging, as Díaz tells the story of a young girl’s imaginary
journey back to her birthplace, “The Island.” The event will be held during the school day for a
group of 100 children who will all receive a copy of Islandborn courtesy of the DCPL Foundation.

STORY TIME GALA RECEPTION


Join the DC Public Library Foundation as leading chefs, bartenders, artists, performers and D.C.
notables reinterpret classic stories in new ways. This event will celebrate and support the

PLA
The 2018 Public Library Association (PLA) Conference is heading to Philadelphia, March 20–24,
2018. Offered biennially, this multi-day event offers more than 100 education programs, social
events, and a bustling exhibits hall featuring the latest in products and services. This year, DCPL
staff will lead two sessions as part of the conference.

PUBLIC LIBRARIES 101: FUNDAMENTALS FOR SUPPORT STAFF


Kim Zablud, DCPL Director of Public Services, and Meaghan O’Connor, DCPL Assistant Director
of Programs and Partnerships will present “Public Libraries 101: Fundamentals for Support
Staff.” The course, which introduces basic public library concepts for paraprofessional library
staff, has been part of annual performance plans for DCPL staff since 2016. The session will
introduce the course content and workshop how participants can bring this approach to their
own libraries.

BREAKING BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT: EMBEDDING LEGAL
SERVICES IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Meaghan O'Connor, Jean Badalamenti, Health and Human Services Assistant Manager, and
Maya Sheppard of Neighborhood Legal Services Program will present Breaking Barriers to
Employment: Embedding Legal Services in Public Libraries. This session will cover how the
partnership works, outcomes, and ideas for replicating the program in other locations.

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE GLEE CLUB CONCERT


The Morehouse College Glee returns to the District for its annual performance. Established in
1911, the distinguished ensemble has a long tradition of public appearances. In addition to its
concerts at the MLK Library dating back to 1975, the Glee Club along has conducted stellar
performances throughout the United States and abroad. Some memorable performances
include Dr. King’s funeral, Super Bowl XXVIII, the 1996 Olympic Games and several presidential
performances.

FEDERATION OF FRIENDS ISSUES CONFERENCE


The Federation of Friends of the DC Public Library will have their second annual “issues”
conference to better connect individual members with the annual budget, advocacy, library
strategic planning, and best practices.
