EXERCISE 2 – VENN DIAGRAMS


These questions will prove to be good exercise for some good practice in number
systems.

Try to do the questions without looking at the solutions. The time allotted is 30 mins.

Question 1:

Out of 210 interviews of IIM- Ahmedabad, 105 CAT crackers were offered tea by
the interview panel, 50 were offered biscuits, and 56 were offered toffees. 32 CAT
crackers were offered tea and biscuits, 30 were offered biscuits and toffees, and 45
were offered toffees and tea. What is the

• maximum and minimum number of CAT crackers who were offered all three
snacks?
• maximum and minimum number of CAT crackers who were offered at least one
snack?

Question 2:

All students in a class of 100 attended a summer camp. Each student had the option
of enrolling for coaching in atmost 3 namely Football, Cricket and hockey.

Also d students had enrolled for exactly 1 sport, e for exactly 2, f for exactly 3 and g
students had not enrolled for any of the three sports.

Question 3: (CAT 2006)

A survey was conducted of 100 people to find out whether they had read recent
issues of Golmal, a monthly magazine. The summarized information regarding
readership in 3 months is given below: Only September: 18, September but not
August: 23, September and July: 28, September: 28, July: 48, July and August: 10,
None of the three months: 24.

What is the number of surveyed people who have read exactly two consecutive
issues (out of the three)?

Question 4:

In a group of 100 students, each student has to opt for one or more of the three
subjects among P,C and M. The number of students opting for M is more than the
number opted for P, which in turn is more than the number for C, which in turn is
more than the number of students who opted for exactly 2 out of 3 subjects, which
in turn is more than the number of students who opted for all the three subjects. It
is also known that at least one student opted for all the three subjects.

This question was wrong in CAT 2006 – it does not have sufficient information to
determine exactly. -> So answer is cannot be determined
