2017 VCE Unit 1 Classical Studies

Time Allocation
This unit of work will consist of approximately 100 hours of which at least 50 hours will be class time. To
complete this unit of work satisfactorily, students must complete each of the following learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
Outcome 1
The student should be able to explain the nature of myth in ancient Greece.

Outcome 2
The student should be able to explain the relationship between myth and archaeology.

Outcome 3
The student should be able to recognise and discuss the representation of a Greek myth.

Assessment Tasks

1 Olympian Gods Mythology SAC


The student is required to present an oral presentation to the class in which they explain the features of a
specific Olympian god and explore the mythology surrounding them.

Weighting: This task is worth 30% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 2 periods
Due: Term 1, Week 5

2 Archaeology SAC
The student is required to research an archaeological site that is connected to an ancient Greek myth. They
will explore the methods of archaeology used and determine whether or not the myth has an historical basis.

Weighting: This task is worth 30% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 2 periods
Due: Term 2, Week 1

3 Semester Examination
The student is required to apply knowledge and understanding of Classical Greek expressions of myth and
their beliefs in a variety of forms ranging from sculpture to epic poem.

Weighting: This task is worth 40% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 90 minutes

Time Allocation
This unit of work will consist of approximately 100 hours of which at least 50 hours will be class time. To
complete this unit of work satisfactorily, students must complete each of the following learning outcomes.

Learning Outcomes
Outcome 1
The student should be able to analyse the ways in which a classical work or classical works present aspects of
classical Greek society.

Outcome 2
The student should be able to discuss the relationship between classical works and a work from a later period.

Assessment Tasks

1 Athenian Development SAC


The student is required to demonstrate their understanding of Athens’ political development as it changed
from a collection of tribes to a major city-state during the 6th century B.C. in a short-answer test.

Weighting: This task is worth 20% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 1 period
Due: Term 3, Week 4

2 Classical Greece Legacy SAC


The student is required to create a written report in which they explore the works of an individual from the
Classical period and explain the impact they’ve had on subsequent works.

Weighting: This task is worth 30% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 2 periods
Due: Term 4, Week 1

3 Text Analysis SAC


The student is required to write an essay that demonstrates an understanding of the context and content of a
Classical work.

Weighting: This task is worth 20% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 1 period
Due: Term 4, Week 4

4 Semester Examination
The student is required to apply knowledge and understanding of Athens during the 5 th century B.C. and
works that were created during that time.

Weighting: This task is worth 30% of the overall grade Time allocated to task: 90 minutes
Due: Term 4, Week 7
Unit 1 Classical Studies Holiday Homework
The text we are studying this unit is The Odyssey, an epic poem thought to have been
created by a travelling bard called Homer in the 8th century B.C.

Holiday Homework Task 1:

Read the first four books of The Odyssey, creating a short summary (6-8 lines) of each
book.

Also make a list of the main characters introduced so far and their role.

This is a work requirement, and successful completion of your holiday homework is


required to receive an “S”. It is due Week 1, Term 1, 2017.
