Three years ago, Peter Black, a Production Manager in a small factory, realised
that, at the age of fifty, he had little chance 0 of moving further up the
company ladder. Nor was he very surprised when his Managing Director
informed him that the company was in financial trouble and Peter could not
rely 1 keeping his job for much longer. However, being an optimist,
Peter realised that being made redundant meant he could change his life and
concentrate 2 doing something he really enjoyed. Peter’s hobby was
collecting woodworking tools, and he sometimes sold some of these to other
collectors. His wife suggested this could be an alternative way 3
earning an income. Although Peter had very little experience 4 buying
and selling commercially, he was good 5 working with computers,
and so decided to sell woodworking tools on-line. This involved 6
setting up his own website, which has now been running for two and a half
years. Although the new business has not made him rich, Peter earns a living
from it, and says the pleasure he gets from his new work compensates
7 not having a regular salary. He feels that the key 8 coping
successfully with redundancy is finding something you really enjoy 9
doing, whether you make money from it or not.
