Introduction
Field experiences are characterized by communication,
collaboration, and accountability in an environment
associated with professional learning. Observation is the
major component of the initial field experience for our
Teacher Education program. It involves being present in an
authentic classroom to observe and reflect upon student and
teacher behaviors and interactions. The setting should
provide numerous opportunities for students to observe and
reflect, evaluate, and contextualize what they see. Often,
these reflective activities include identification of various
teaching and assessment methods, determining the success
of the instruction, and an opportunity to understand the
changing demographics and inclusion of different learners in
a classroom.
In collaboration with NAEYC and PDE, Education students at
Harrisburg Area Community College will be provided with
courses requiring field placement hours in placements
varying in age, demographics, and location.

Area Community College prior to the first day of class in the
semester your are observing. Students failing to have all
clearances on file will be dropped from the class. You also
may be required to show original clearances in your
observational placements. These clearances MUST BE
RENEWED ANNUALLY.

What is Required?

Act 151 Clearance: Pennsylvania Child Abuse History
Act 114 Clearance: FBI Criminal History (fingerprints)
TB Test: Mantoux
Teacher Education candidates with any type of record, on any
clearance, will require a meeting with our Clearance and
Placement Coordinator and Education Department Program
Director. Harrisburg Area Community College does not

because of the citation, but candidates need to be aware of
future issues with the Department of Education and future
employers. All candidates must be aware that the
Pennsylvania Department of Education has the final decision
on whether these infraction on your record will impede the
issuance of your certificate.

Documentation
You will need to provide official documentation of your hours
spent in each observation placement on the Field Placement
Attendance form. Teaching mentors will be required to sign
your attendance form each visit. This form will be included in
your pre—professional portfolio.

Page 9!
The Field Placement Attendance form is available in the back
of the handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to bring this
form to the mentor teacher at each visit.

Your Role in the Classroom when Observing

When visiting a school, it is very important to “go with the
flow”. You are a guest observer, and you do not want to
intrude or distract in any way. Here are some important
points to follow:
• Sometimes unexpected things happen in schools. (fire
drills, early dismissals, safety emergencies) If you are able
to stay on the school property, please record the event on
your observation form. If you must

!8
leave the school property, your must reschedule your
observation time with the teacher.
• Non-instructional activities (lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal,
etc...) are great activities to observe. It’s great to see
organizational and management skills. It is also important
to observe special classes and activities that are
instructional in nature. (physical education, art, music,
computer, library, assemblies)

Page
• Your primary task is to sit quietly and observe. Discuss with
your mentor teacher what they would like you to do during
the visit. Do not interrupt or join in activities, unless the
teacher invites you. You should never be with a child or
children without another adult present in the classroom!
• If a teacher asks you to do something you are not
comfortable with, you may respectfully remind him/her
that your role is to observe.
• If a teacher invites you to perform a task in the room that
you are comfortable with, you may do so.
• Students will be curious and excited to have you in their
classroom. Be friendly and polite, but DO NOT distract the
child or engage them in a conversation during instructional
time.
• If you see a student in a dangerous situation that has gone
unnoticed, it is acceptable to intervene. Let common sense
be your guide when safety is the issue.

Page 11!
Professionalism
You are a guest in the classroom and you represent HACC.
Teachers and administrators have agreed to let you visit as a
courtesy. Use the following information as a guide in this
process.
1. Have a professional attitude
You can help create a positive learning environment. Project
interest and enthusiasm for what you are doing. If you
interact with students, be supportive and encouraging. Show
respect to students, teachers, parents, administrators, and
building workers at all times. Recognize that we all have good
days and bad days. Do not make quick judgements if you see
someone having a bad day.
2. Confidentiality is important
It is not acceptable to talk about what you have seen/heard in
classrooms, once you are outside of that classroom. The
exception is our college classroom. You may talk about
situations you have observed in your course classroom when
appropriate, however, please do so in a manner that your
classmates cannot specifically identify the teacher or student
you are discussing. If you have concerns about something you
observe, you can discuss it with your course instructor at any
time. Never take a photo of a student on your phone or

Page 12!
camera without permission from the teacher. Violations of
confidentially will be taken seriously and could result in the
removal from the course.
3. Be responsible and ready
• If you cannot make it to a scheduled observation, due to
illness or emergency, it is very important that you let the
teacher know BEFORE your scheduled visit.
• Be on time!
• Have all materials you need with you and organized. You
will need a folder for your materials, paper for note
taking, and a pen or pencil.
• All extra bags should be left in the car.
• Cell phones should also be left in the car, unless
absolutely necessary. DO NOT TEXT, TWEET, FACEBOOK
OR SPEAK ON THE PHONE IN THE SCHOOL!
• Always thank the teacher at the end of the observation
and let them know you are leaving. Remember to have
your mentor teacher sign your attendance log at each
visit!
Dress Code

Page 13!
All students will dress professionally for their observational
visits in the field placement assignment. You are
representing Harrisburg Area Community College and
yourself as a professional. Jeans and sneakers are NOT
acceptable. Hair should be neat and tidy. YOU WILL BE
TURNED AWAY FROM OBSEVING, IF YOU ARRIVE TO YOUR
MENTOR CLASSROOM AND HAVE NOT FOLLOWED THESE
GUIDELINES.

All students observing will be required to wear the following:

• HACC polo shirt
• Khaki or black pants
• NO JEGGINGS, SPANDEX, or ATHLETIC WEAR

Polo shirts are available to purchase in all campus bookstores

in sizes S - XL. Harrisburg and Lancaster will be carrying the
shirts in stock. Other campus bookstores can special order
shirts for you. Shirts are $23. You may use your financial aid
to purchase shirts.

Cell Phone Policy

All students are required to sign and follow the HACC

Education Department Cell Phone Policy. Please access the
form in the back section of this handbook and submit with
your clearances at www.hacccompliance.com. For your
Page
convenience, the form can also be electronically signed on
the Complio website.
!12

Page 15!
Absence and Lateness Policy

As stated above, it is your responsibility to notify your mentor

teacher if you are not attending a scheduled observation or if
you will be late to a scheduled observation. Reasons for
missing a scheduled observation are illness or emergency.
You must contact the teacher BEFORE the absence. Teachers
may be notified by phone, email, or text. Please
communicate with your mentor teacher as to the method of
communication they prefer best. Failure to inform your
mentor teacher or several unexcused absences, may result in
your removal from the placement. This may result in a failing
grade for the course.

Course Requirements

Field placements are required by the PA Department of

Education and NAEYC Accreditation board. Harrisburg Area
Community College has set forth guidelines for the required
hours. Individual courses will have specific assignments for
your field placement hours. On the next page, is a general
guide for the courses requiring hours outside of the
classroom. Please see your course instructor for more
information of what is required specifically for each course
field placement. Documentation of placement hours on the
Page

Documentation

Documentation of field placement hours are the

responsibility of the teaching mentor, as you will be required
to sign the field placement student’s attendance form at each
visit. Please check to see that the student has recorded the
date and time of the observation correctly. At the first visit,
please also check the name, address, and contact information
for your placement. This will be at the top of the signature
form. Your signature acts as verification of the hours for the
placement.

The Field Placement Attendance form is available in the back

of the handbook. It is the student’s responsibility to bring this
form to you at each visit in your classroom.

Mentor Responsibilities

1. Documentation
As stated above, you will be responsible for documenting the
placement hours for the field placement student at each
scheduled observation.

Page
2. Answer questions
Field placement students may have lots of questions. Many
of their questions will be specific to the focus of the
observation and/or assignment. Students will be observing
student behavior, classroom management, inclusion,
assessment, teaching strategies, lesson planning, curriculum
specific

goals, facility, program philosophies, to just name a few.

Students many also have questions that arise during the
course of the observation. Please communicate with the field
placement student the best method for asking you questions.
Chances are, you will be instructing students during the time
of the observation. Determine in advance the procedure for
asking and having questions answered.

3. Provide quality examples of teaching

Please consider your selection as a teaching mentor a
compliment to you as a teacher. As stated above, students
may be there to observe best teaching practices, classroom
management, and teacher-student relationships. Please
remember that you are a role model and mentor to the field
placement student and will have a large part in their
development into a quality educator. We take these field

Page
placement hours in the classroom very seriously at HACC.
They are amazing opportunities to make connections
between what students are learning in their Education
courses and the real world. Thank you for your time and
service to the college and the profession.

4. Report any student not adhering to policies of

professionalism. Students not following the HACC dress code,
violating ethical conduct, or using cell
phones/pagers/electronic devices (other than for

Harrisburg Area Community College
 Education
Department Program Standards

All individuals, including persons with disabilities, who plan to work with young children during
HACC Field Experiences and when they enter employment after graduation, must be able to
perform specific essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

This Education Program Standards document outlines the abilities and behavioral characteristics
necessary for the student to be admitted to, continue in, and graduate from the Early Childhood/
Elementary Education programs at HACC. These are standards of admission and will be reviewed
with/for each student at least twice while they are a student at HACC to ensure that the student still
meets the program standards.

36
Each student should carefully review these program standards for the Education Program and ask
questions if not familiar with the activities or functions listed. The student must decide if he or she
has any limitations that may restrict or interfere with satisfactory performance of any of the
requirements. It is ultimately the applicant’s responsibility to meet these program standards
and to notify their academic advisor if their ability to meet the qualifications changes during
their enrollment in the Early Childhood/Elementary Education program.

The applicant should consult with the program director to discuss any individual situation if he or
she may not be able to meet these essential qualifications. Requests for reasonable
accommodation will be considered. Contact the program director if you have any questions about
this matter.
Dr. Cindi Davis
cldavis@hacc.edu
717-780-2463

Please note that according to the ADA, an institution may not exclude an “otherwise qualified”
student merely because of a disability, if the institution can reasonably modify its program or
facilities to accommodate the student with a disability. However, an institution need not provide
accommodations or modify its program of study or facilities such that the accommodations or
modifications would “fundamentally alter” and/or place an “undue burden on” the educational
program or academic requirements and technical standards which are essential to the program.

Students who enter a course of study in the Early Childhood/Elementary Education program at
HACC will also be required to provide necessary documentation prior to their participation in EDUC
110 or 111. Students will also be responsible for maintaining these compliance documents
annually. The following must be completed (at your own expense), once you are enrolled in Early
Childhood/ Elementary Education programs.

• PA Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 51) • TB Test

• PA State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34) • FBI Clearance: Fingerprint Check
It is the student’s responsibility to inform Jennifer Myers, the Clearance/Placement
Coordinator, immediately if their clearance status changes while they are a student at HACC.
Failure to do so may result in dismissal from the Early Childhood/Elementary Education
program.
