Banking & Financial Awareness

1. The 14th Inclusive finance India summit held in ____New Delhi.


Note:
➢ The summit offers a platform for a plethora of information to all the thought leaders and industry veterans to
debate the issues and challenges involving the Financial Inclusion in the country.
2. The ministry has raised customs duty on some electronic items including television, mobile phone, projector, and water
heater in order to boost domestic manufacturing ___ Finance ministry.
Note:
➢ Customs duty on television set has been increased to 15% from the existing 10% and the duty on monitors and
projectors has been doubled to 20%.
➢ For the push button telephone or mobile, the duty has been raised to 15% from 0, while water heater and hair
dressing instrument duty has been doubled to 20%.
3. The State Bank of India (SBI) has introduced a loyalty program for its valued customers ___State Bank Rewardz.
Note:
➢ The program gives the SBI customers several opportunities to earn reward points and earn many times faster at
Max Get More partner outlets.
➢ These reward points can be redeemed for full or partial payments to get products and services online as well as
from Max Get More partner outlets.
4. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to impose Rs 3 crore penalty on the bank for breaching rules on income
classification norms___ IndusInd Bank.
Note:
➢ The penalty was imposed for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on Income Recognition and Asset
Classification (IRAC) norms and contravention of regulatory restrictions pertaining to non-fund based (NFB)
facilities.
5. A special financial scheme has been by J& K bank has been launched for journalists of the state __J&K Bank Sahafat
Finance Scheme.
Note:
➢ It will enable journalists to buy cameras, laptops, tablets, and books.
➢ The minimum loan amount for the purpose has been fixed at Rs 50,000 while as the maximum cap is Rs 3 lacks.
6. The Capital market regulator has raised the investment limit for foreign portfolio investors in central government
securities to over 1.91 lakh crore from next month___ Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
Note:
➢ Currently, investment limit for foreign portfolio investors is 1.89 lakh crore rupees.
➢ The move is part of an effort by Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to push inflow from overseas
investors in the country's capital markets.
7. The country signed a financing agreement of USD 125 million with the World Bank (WB) for the Skills Strengthening for
Industrial Value Enhancement Operation (STRIVE) Project in New Delhi___ India.
Note:
➢ The purpose of the project is to improve access to quality and market-driven vocational training provided in it is
and apprenticeships.

1. The new Director of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad ____ R Hemalatha.
Note:
➢ Hemalatha has served as secretary of the Nutrition Society of India, is a fellow of the National Academy of Medical
Sciences and a fellow of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences.
➢ The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) is an Indian Public health, Biotechnology and Translational research
center located in Hyderabad, India.
2. Former president has won Chile's presidential election run-off____ Sebastian Pinera.
Note:
➢ He has replaced Michelle Bachelet.
➢ With 98.44% of the ballots counted, Pinera had won 54.57% in the run-off vote, to 45.43% for senator Guillier.
➢ Chile is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the
Pacific Ocean to the west.
3. Who takes charge as the acting Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) __ Justice Umesh Dattatraya Salvi.
Note:
➢ The Tribunal has Original Jurisdiction on matters of "substantial question relating to environment" & "damage to
environment due to specific activity" (such as pollution).

➢ Previous year's winner (Mr. India 2016) was Vishnu Raj Menon.
➢ Sixteen contestants from all over the country are shortlisted to compete in the finals.
➢ He did his graduation from Indraprastha Engineering College in Delhi.
2. Who has been named the U.S. male Player of the Year ___ Christian Pulisic.
Note:
➢ Pulisic achieved 94% of the votes collected from the men’s national team players & coaches, domestic league head
coaches, former players, administrators, and the media.
➢ Christian Pulisic recorded six goals and four assists in nine matches, and was involved in 13 of the 17 goals scored
during matches in which he played this year.
3. The Moortidevi Award for the year 2017 for his poetry collection titled ‘Du Dondo Phowara Matro’ ___ Joy Goswami.
Note:
➢ ‘Du Dondo Phowara Matro’ is an autobiographical account of the poet’s life featuring his close ones including a pet
cat.
➢ The Moortidevi award consists of a Saraswati Statue, a Citation Plaque and cash award of Rupees 4 lacks.
4. Swiss tennis player has been voted BBC overseas sports personality of the year for a record fourth time ___ Roger
Federer.
Note:
➢ Earlier, Federer won the award in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
➢ Federer became the first man to win Wimbledon eight times and extended his record to 19 Grand Slam titles in
2017.
5. The star forward of FC Barcelona superstar has received La Liga’s top scorer and best player awards for the football
season 2016-17___ Lionel Messi.
Note:
➢ Messi scored 37 goals in league action last season to earn his fourth Pichichi award for most goals in La Liga.
➢ Second to the Argentine was Los Blancos superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, while Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar
finished in third place.
6. Indian personality has won the Global icon award at the Zee Cine Awards 2018__ Priyanka Chopra.
Note:
➢ Best Film award was conferred to Rohit Shetty directorial comedy ‘Golmaal Again’ and Extraordinary Legend
Award goes to Amitabh Bachchan.
7. Who has been crowned Miss India USA 2017___ Shree Saini.

➢ Anti-bullying activist Shree Saini (Washington resident) has been crowned Miss India USA 2017 at the Royal
Alberts Palace in Edison, New Jersey.
➢ Prachi Singh from Connecticut was declared the first runner-up at the pageant.
➢ Cancer surgeon Kavita Malhotra Pattani (Florida) was declared Mrs India USA 2017.
8. Who has been honored with the prestigious Golden Peacock Innovation Management Award for the year 2017 for driving
innovation in mines__ Joda East Iron Mine (JEIM).
Note:
➢ The award was given at Institute of Directors India’s 2nd Global Convention held at Singapore.
➢ The JEIM is one of the fully mechanised captive iron mines of Tata Steel.

Important News – India

1. Vice- President ‘M Venkaiah Naidu’ has inaugurated the third World Telugu Conference in ____Hyderabad.
Note:
➢ The 5-day conference will promote Telugu and its literature besides helping the present generation learn more
about Telugu language.
➢ Around eight thousand Telugu speaking delegates from 40 countries all over the globe will be taking part.
2. Supreme Court extends deadline for Aadhaar linkage up to ___31st March 2018.
Note:
➢ The Supreme Court has extended the deadline till 31st March next 2018 for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with
various services and welfare schemes.
➢ A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also modified its earlier order with regard to
linking of Aadhaar with mobile services.
3. According to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) revised order, Construction activities will be prohibited within meters
from the edge of river Ganga in hilly areas ___50 metres.
Note:
➢ It will now be treated as No Development Zone where no construction including commercial or residential
buildings can come up.
➢ The area falling between 50-100 metres will be considered as "regulatory" zone and there will be ban on
construction activity in this area till the state comes with a specific policy.
4. The Skill Development Ministry have signed an agreement with the company to impart training to youth and enhance their
employment potential in New Delhi ____Maruti Suzuki.
Note:
➢ As part of agreement, Maruti Suzuki will ensure that not less than 80% of trainees are placed with Maruti Suzuki
or its business partner.
➢ Maruti Suzuki will develop specific training module as per need of the automobile industry in consultation with
DGT.
5. India’s first-ever National Rail and Transport University (NRTU) will set up in the state ___ Vadodara (Gujarat).
Note:
➢ This innovative idea will be a catalyst for transformation of rail and transport sector towards New India.
➢ The University will be set up as a Deemed to Be University under de novo category as per the UGC (Institutions
Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016.
6. Indian city has been ranked 7th in most expensive office locations list ___ Delhi.
Note:
➢ Delhi has been ranked 7th in most expensive office locations list in the world, according to latest JLL India Report
2017.

Important Day

1. The day marks its military victory over Pakistan in 1971 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971___ Vijay Diwas.

➢ On December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General AAK Niazi (chief of Pakistani forces), along with 93 thousand troops,
surrendered to the allied forces, comprising the Indian Army and the Mukti Bahini.
➢ Bangladesh is also celebrating its Victory Day.
2. The UN’s (United Nation) International Migration Day(IMD) is being observed every year on___ 18th December.
Note:
➢ The theme of this year is Safe Migration in a World on the Move.
➢ In Dec 2000, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 18 Dec as International Migrants Day after taking into account
the large and increasing number of migrants in the world.
3. The state is celebrating its 56th Liberation Day ___Goa.
Note:
➢ The state was liberated on this day in 1961 from Portuguese control after almost 450 years of colonial rule.
➢ Goa is a state in India within the coastal region known as the Konkan in Western India, bounded by Maharashtra to
the north and Karnataka to the east and south, with the Arabian Sea forming its Western coast.

States News

1. The state govt. has started efforts to adopt Clinical establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act to ensure the
minimum standards of facilities and services provided by them ____ Maharashtra Govt.
Note:
➢ Since 2010, the draft Clinical Establishment Bill has been pending in the state to opposition from medical
fraternity.
➢ This bill will pave way to control unethical practices adopted by some of the private hospitals. The proposal is
pending with the Planning Department.
2. PM Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 60-megawatt Tuirial hydroelectric power project from ___Aizawl, Mizoram.
Note:
➢ Now, the Mizoram had become the third power- surplus state in the north-east after Sikkim and Tripura.
➢ The hydropower project would produce ‘251 million units’ of electrical energy every year.
3. The petroleum minister has inaugurated the eastern India’s first compressed natural gas (CNG) stations for scooters in
___Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Note:
➢ He has also inaugurated CNG-run scooters and CNG stations for three-wheelers at Chandrasekharpur and Patia
area in Bhubaneswar.
➢ The CNG stations were part of GAIL’s Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga and City Gas Distribution (CGD) projects in
Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
4. The festival being celebrated in Ladakh region to mark the new year in the different parts of Ladakh region of ____ Jammu
Kashmir.
Note:
➢ Prayer flags are hoisted in important religious places to welcome the new year.
➢ Losar Festival is celebrated by making symbolic meals and offerings.
5. The state’s Cabinet has approved a scheme to provide a pension of Rs. 1500 to transgenders community above 18 years of
age in the state__ Andhra Pradesh.
Note:
➢ Under this scheme, the transgenders will be provided ration cards, plots, scholarships and skill development for
financial stability.
➢ Around 26,000 eligible transgenders in the state.
6. Punjab Chief Minister ‘Amarinder Singh’ has launched a mobile app to check unauthorized construction __PUDA-UCIC.
Note:
➢ With this app, the field staff and public would be able to click pictures of any unauthorised construction from the
spot and upload them for further action.
➢ The app will enable quick action to stop any ongoing illegal construction, the web portal will facilitate easy land
use change and help citizens track any such change.
7. The traditional 40-day long period of harsh winter has begun in the Kashmir Valley__ Chillai Kalan.
Note:
➢ Chillai Kalan is a period of forty extremely cold days starting from 21st of December.
➢ This is the date on which Winter Solstice is observed in the Northern Hemisphere.

8. The state govt has become the 6th state in the country to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Isha
Foundation to conserve and rejuvenate the rivers in the state ____Assam.
Note:
➢ Isha Foundation is a non-profit making and spiritual organization the Isha foundation.
➢ Its founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s nationwide ‘Rally for Rivers’ campaign is an initiative for revitalizing India’s
rivers.

Important News – World

1. The world's first country to shut down national broadcasts of its FM network by completing its transition to digital radio__
Norway.
Note:
➢ The transition will allow for better sound quality, a greater number of channels and more functions, at a cost eight
times lower than FM radio.
➢ The transition concerns only national radio channels
2. The two-week long Indo-Maldives joint military exercise has begun at Belagavi, Bengaluru __Ekuverin.
Note:
➢ The bilateral annual exercise is a joint military training between the Indian Army and the Maldives National
Defence Force (MNDF).
➢ The annual exercise held alternatively in India and Maldives since 2009.
3. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared central African country ‘polio-free country’____ Gabon.
Note:
➢ The UN health agency nonetheless recommended taking the necessary steps to continue monitoring for possible
signs of the disease.
➢ Since 1988, Cases of polio have decreased by 99%, when polio was endemic in 125 countries and 350,000 cases
were recorded worldwide.
4. The country has announced to extending a pilot student visa scheme to 23 more universities___ UK govt.
Note:
➢ Now, Indian, and other non-EU students will get six-month time to find a job after finishing their course.
➢ Last year, the scheme was introduced on a pilot basis in four British varsities Oxford, Bath, Cambridge and
Imperial College London.
5. The country will host a meeting of WTO member countries in February to muster support for food security and other
issues ___ India.
Note:
➢ The union govt is trying to call a meeting of almost 30 to 40 countries in Delhi to help multi-lateral process.
➢ India has been keenly pushing agriculture issues at the World Trade Organization.
➢ The World Trade Organization(WTO) is an intergovernmental organization that regulates international trade.
6. Telecom operator has signed an agreement with Millicom International Cellular S.A. to acquire its Rwanda’s operation
‘Tigo Rwanda’___ Bharti Airtel Limited.
Note:
➢ Tigo’s 370 million customers will join the network of Airtel Rwanda.
➢ Now, Airtel Rwanda will be the second largest operator in the country with revenues of over USD 80 million and a
revenue market share of over 40%.
7. Country has topped the list of people living abroad at 17 million with about 5 million Indians residing in the Gulf region
alone____ India.
Note:
➢ The number of migrants from India now reside in multiple destination countries, including the UAE at 3 million,
the US and Saudi Arabia at 2 million each.

➢ Mexico(2nd), Russia(3rd), China(4th), Bangladesh(5th), Pakistan Syria(6th), and Ukraine also have large migrant
populations living abroad (around 6 to 11 million each).
8. The Indian Navy deployed a submarine and the P8I long-range maritime aircraft for a bilateral naval exercise with the
____Omani navy.

➢ Indian Naval Ships Trikand and Teg are deployed to Oman for bilateral exercise ‘Naseem Al Bahr’ or ‘Sea Breeze’.
➢ The first exercise Indian Navy with Royal Navy of Oman was conducted in 1993 and this year marks 24 years of
Indian Navy -Royal Navy of Oman bilateral exercises.
9. The 17th 2-day Indian Science Communication Congress (ISCC-2017) held in __ New Delhi.
Note:
➢ The purpose of the 2-day ISCC-2017 to engage in narratives around India’s scientific wisdom.
➢ The Focal Theme of the ISCC-2017 is “Communicating India’s Scientific Wisdom: Changing Paradigms”.
10. India and the country has signed pact for socio-economic development of Rakhine State___ Myanmar.
Note:
➢ The MoU is intended to help the Government of Myanmar to achieve its objective of restoration of normalcy in
Rakhine State and enable the return of displaced Muslim Rohingyas.

Sports News

1. The boxer has been named the Asian Boxing Confederation’s best youth boxer of the year 2017___ Sachin Siwach.
Note:
➢ Sachin won after an online poll conducted by the continental body in his category and polled 36.2 % votes.
➢ Earlier, he claimed the Asian youth championships silver this year besides a gold at the Youth Commonwealth
Games.
2. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has granted official status to the new format and minimum of overs will be played
on each day of the four-day test__98 overs.
Note:
➢ An extra 30 minutes to accommodate the additional 8 overs in the 4-day format as a minimum of 90 overs are
required to be bowled per day during a five-day test match.
➢ A first-innings lead of 150 will be enough to enforce the follow-on.
➢ This is 50 runs less than the runs needed in the five-day format.
3. The emblems of the Beijing 2022 Olympic have been named____ Winter Dream.
Note:
➢ Paralympic Winter Games "Flight” have been named.
➢ The chief designer of the two emblems is Lin Cunzhen, deputy dean of China Central Academy of Fine Arts' Design
School.
4. FIFA ethics committee has suspended the head of the Brazilian football federation for 90 days over a breach of its rules___
Marco Polo Del Nero.
Note:
➢ Del Nero was accused of accepting a 6.5 million Euro commission.
➢ The decision bans Del Nero from any football-related activities during this period.
5. India has won medals in the first Wushu Sanda Asian Cup in Guangzhou, China ____Ten.
6. India have clinched the One-Day International (ODI) series 2-1 against the country and recorded their eighth successive
win in a bilateral contest___ Sri Lanka.

➢ Earlier, India defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third and final cricket ODI at Visakhapatnam.
➢ Player of the Series: Shikhar Dhawan.
7. India’s freestyle wrestler clinched the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, in South Africa __
Sushil Kumar.
Note:
➢ He defeated Akash Khullar with a pinfall in the final of the 74kg freestyle category.
➢ Rio Olympic medallist, Sakshi Malik won the gold medal in the 62kg women's freestyle category.
8. Indian shuttler lost in to Yamaguchi in the final in Dubai World Badminton Super series___ P V Sindhu.

9. The former Milan and Real Madrid midfielder announced his retirement from football___ Kaka.

➢ He joined Milan in 2003 and stayed for six years before joining Real Madrid for a then-world record (£56m) fee.
➢ Kaka won 92 caps for Brazil, scoring 29 goals and featuring at three World Cups, forming part of the squad that
lifted the trophy in 2002.
10. Four-time Olympic champion has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2017___ Sir Mo Farah.

➢ He won his third successive world 10,000m gold medal in London in August.
➢ Farah becomes the first long-distance runner to win the Sports Personality award since Paula Radcliffe in 2002.
11. India’s umpires have been named in the panel of umpires for the 2018 Hockey World Cup ___ Jav Raghu Prasad and
Javed Shaikh.

➢ India’s Raghu Prasad and Javed Shaikh have named in the panel of umpires for the 2018 Hockey World Cup to be
held in Bhubaneswar.
