Folkdance of Visayas

Tinikling

History background:
One of the oldest traditional Filipino dances, the tinikling dance, or
bamboo dance, is performed using long bamboos poles. Originating on
the Island of Leyte in the central Philippines, the tinikling dances takes its
name from the tinikling kind. The movements of the dance are meant to
initiate the bird as it steps through its marshy habited.
Steps: These steps are called Singles, Doubles, hops. Four people should
be two boys and girls. The first couple performs the dance and the other
couple operate the bamboo poled by hitting them together and also
tapping them on the floor in rhythm to the music.
Kuratsa

History background:
The Kuratsa is believed to be Mexican impost supportly from La
Curacha dance typical to Menterrez of Mexico. The kuratsa is, however
very different in the manner of association than the Mexican counterpart.
The basic kuratsa music is not based on Mexican or Spanish. The Bohol
is rather believed to be four runner of Waray because of the strict
emphasis are just of impromptu songs with dancing.
Steps of kuratsa: Partner join inside hands, free hands downs at the
sides. Starting with the R foot, take 3 steps forward (etc. 1,2,3). Put feet
together and bow to partner or audience (ct. 1)… (2m) Dancers separate
about six apart. The last two counts of the music are not played until the
partners are in their proper places.
Mazurka Boholana

History background:
The folk origins of the mazurek are two other Polish musical
forms which are the slow kujawiak and the fast oberek. The mazurek is
always found to have either a triplet, trill, dotted eight note pair, or an
ordinary eight note pair before two quarter notes. In polish, this musical
form is called “mazmek” – a word derivedfrom “mazur”, which up to
the nineteenth century denoted an inhabitant of Polands Mazuria. By
including more chromaticism and harmony in the mazurkas, he made
them more technically interesting than the traditional dances.
Steps of Mazurka Boholana:
The step pattern is slide, cut, and hop step to a triple measure.
