OBJECTIVE: To compute the average rainfall over a catchment area using different methods.

INSTRUMENTS: (a) Rain gauges, (b) any string, (c) marking pins, (d) steel tape

LOCATION: Toledo City

DATE: January 07, 2018

TIME: 16 minutes and 28 seconds

DATA:

Total Land Area: 3.53 sq. m

Container/Rain Gauge Diameter: 55 mm

STATION 1 STATION 2 STATION 3

Height (mm) 7 7 8

Volume (cu.mm) 16630.81 16630.81 19006.64

Precipitation Readings:

A. ARITHMETIC METHOD

PROCEDURE:

1.) Record the rainfall from each gauge

station.

2.) Compute areal average by dividing

its sum to the total number of gauge
stations.
SOLUTION:

1 N
P  Pi
N i 1
16630.81  16630.81  19006.64
P

B. THIESSEN P  17422.75mm 3

POLYGON METHOD

PROCEDURE:

1.) Draw lines joining adjacent gauges.

2.) Draw perpendicular bisectors to the

lines created in step 1.

3.) Extend the lines created in step 2 in

both directions to form representative areas
for gauges.

4.) Compute representative area for each

gauge.

5.) Compute the areal average using its formula.

SOLUTION:

AREA 1 = 2.66 sq. m

AREA 2 = 1.31 sq. m

AREA 3 = 1.74 sq. m

1 N
P  AiPi
A i 1
(16630.81x 2.66)  (16630.81x1.31)  (19006.64 x1.74)
P
5.71
C. P  17354.8mm 3

ISOHYETAL METHOD

PROCEDURE:
1.) Construct isohyets (rainfall contours).

2.) Compute area between each pair of adjacent isohyets (Ai).

3.) Compute average precipitation for each pair of adjacent isohyets (Pi).

4.) Compute the areal average using its formula.

SOLUTION:

AREA 1 = 0.135 sq. m

AREA 2 = 0.889 sq. m

AREA 3 = 0.144 sq. M

1 N
P  AiPi
A i 1
(16630.81x0.135)  (16630.81x 0.889)  (19006.64 x0.144)
P
1.168
P  16923.7 mm 3

CONCLUSION:

As I have observed, each method has different results. But of the three methods,
Arithmetic Method and Thiessen Polygon Method has closer results. Base on the procedure of
gathering the data, I can say that the data gathered using the Thiessen Method is more reliable
because it considers the area of every station.
