4 Connecting wires

2. STAR DELTA STARTING

THEORY:

The Star Delta Starter is a very common type of starter and is used extensively as
compared to the other type of starting methods of the induction motor. A star delta is used for a
cage motor designed to run normally on the delta connected stator winding. In the START
position, the stator windings are connected in the STAR .When the motor picks up the speed,
about 80 percent of its rated speed, it is immediately put into the RUN position. As a result, a
stator winding which was in star connection is changed into DELTA connection now.
Firstly, the stator winding is connected in star and then in Delta so that the starting line
current of the motor is reduced to one-third as compared to the starting current with the windings
connected in delta. At the starting of an induction motor when the windings of the stator are star
connected, each stator phase gets a voltage V/√3 , here V is the line voltage.
Since the developed torque is proportional to the square of the voltage applied to an
induction motor. Star delta starter reduces the starting torque to one-third that is obtained by
direct delta starting.
Contacter module

Contacter module consist of 3 phase 16A contactor switches on the 3 phase power input to the
output circuit. This contactor is made to switch on by providing 230V AC to energizing coil.
Depending on the requirement , the energizing coil voltage will differ. The contactor capacity is
to carry line current of 16A from the input to the output side.

When the contactor is made on , in addition to connecting the 3 phase input power to the output
circuit, 2 NO ( Normally open) contacts and 2 NC (Normally closed ) contacts are also made
available using additional circuits. These contacts will be used for constructing Electrical control
circuits. Since ,Neutral is required for the Electrical circuits , it is also provided in the module.

Push switch module

Push Switch module consists of three Push Switches.

NO and NC contacts are made available with the Push Switches.
One NC contact is provided with Stop Push Switch.
Two nos of NO and one no. of NC are provided with Start/Forward Push switch.
One NO and NC are provided with Reverse Push Switch.
These Push switches with NO and NC are required to wire control circuits.

Timer module

The timer module consist of the following .

1.Output contact: Double pole double throw output contact. Contact rating :5A /230V AC.
2. Operating Mode : On delay
`The operating modes and time ranges are set by available DIP switch settings. The
details have been printed in the side if timer unit itself . The timer is made on by energizing the
coil by applying 230V AC to the coil. The timer is used in several applications (like automatic
star delta starter ).The output contacts are used in control circuits.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
INSTRUCTIONS AND EXPECTED RESULTS

1. Bring the hand drawn circuit diagram.

2. Wire up the control circuit carefully.
3. Maximum of two chances will be given for showing the output.
4. Verify the condition of main contactor and star contactor at the time of starting and also
the main contactor and delta contactor at the running condition.
5. Output is verified by using set of 3 bulbs.
