Hotel Eleganté– Budget/Conference Hotel

Hotel Eleganté Conference and Event Center is located at 2886 S Circle Dr., Colorado Springs, CO, 80906. It
would be classified as a budget hotel and conference center, that caters especially to families. It has 500 guest

center, a tennis court, a basketball court, a pickelball court, volleyball and beach volleyball courts, a “fun zone”

nities, it seems that Hotel Eleganté serves clientele that are traveling for business, and clientele with children and
family. (Hotel Eleganté)

vibrant colors make the hotel’s interior inviting and elegant. The hotel’s mission is to ensure “friendliness, cleanli-
ness, and impeccable service”, and to offer enjoyment for “the entire family”. This mission is conveyed through-
out the design and services of the hotel. No child will be be bored by the vibrant design elements, and no parent

Interviews and Observations at Existing Hotels

The Mining Exchange- by Shelby Johnson

The Mining Exchange, A Wyndham Grand Hotel and Spa, provided a wonderful example of space planning and attention to ADA standards,
as well as Universal Design standards. I felt welcome and comfortable as soon as the doorman let me inside. The reception desk was not
visible at entry, which may have been confusing without the doorman directing me. I entered the lounge and reception area, which was an
impressive room with plenty of natural light, open space, and baroque-inspired furnishings.

Doug, who was attending the Reception desk, was happy to answer my questions and allow me to sketch the reception area. He believed
that guests should feel well attended to, and comfortable when entering the hotel. Doug explained that guests with disabilities are always ac-
commodated, and staff is happy to help with any need. In observing the hotel’s layout, I noticed that all doors were oversized and circulation
pathways were kept very clear and open. Doug decided there was nothing he would to change about the hotel’s layout, as it is easy to nav-
igate. I noticed that the restrooms and elevators were clearly labeled with proper signage. A 60” wheelchair turning radius could be accom-
plished throughout the areas I observed.

Unfortunately, there were very few guests in the lobby. The few guests that were in the lobby appeared to be busy, so I was not able to con-
duct a guest interview. Everyone I saw at the hotel seemed happy to be there and pleased by the interior environment.

Courtyard Peoria Downtown- by Kathleen Chresaidos

When interviewing Michelle from Courtyard she had a few things to say. “The rooms are all cool in color and gives it a calming feeling”. The pool side is huge for all the guests and the lobby is “one
of a kind”. The bathrooms in the rooms are to code and handicap assessable with handles for the baths and toilets. “There is always have someone there when someone’s in need”. “There is enough
space for bed/beds and a desk with full view of the outside. Big bathroom in the corner of the rooms. Just enough space for each room to feel at home”.
Irvine Marriott- by Christopher To
Conveniently a located just block from John Wayne Airport, the Irvine Marriott is the ideal setting for comfort, convenience, and genuine hos-
pitality. With over 26,000 square feet of flexible meeting space and exceptional event menus that will inspire visitors, the dedicated staff is here
to exceed the expectations. Although its rating is 3 stars, Marriott provides deluxe accommodation and a free shuttle service. It also features a
well-equipped gym. Rooms at the Marriott Irvine combine eclectic tapestries with classic furnishings. Each room has large windows, a seating
area and a working station. They are equipped with a flat-screen TV and a movie selection. Overall, from floor plan to interior design, the Irvine
Marriott is really nice business hotel to stay at and should be rated four stars after the renovation.
Interview Responses:
 What do you think function of reception area? Does the design efficient enough to perform your work?
 The primary role of the reception area is to welcome guests. It can offer ways of making additional engagement with the local community
to the commercial advantage of the hotel. The design can enhance this relationship by making area around reception work as almost as commu-
nity spaces. Design alone cannot make the space active, it needs operational and efficiency to fall into place.
 What do you think of the lobby? What impression you feel when first enter?
 The lobby area is large enough, not as grand as other hotel, but very well plan. With the newly renovation, it brings warm and coziness to
the place. Amble seating and space for guests to move around freely.
 How are physical disabilities addressed?
 As required by law, especially in California, the hotel is catering to all type of people; therefore, no need to concern for the disabled
guest. From our reception counter, public restroom, private bathroom, all are put into consideration.
 How are the ADA rooms different from the standard rooms?
 The only thing different between the ADA rooms and standard rooms is the bathroom. Instead of step-in shower, the shower space is level
with the ground floor. In addition, a 5’ turn about is in place.
 What are the positive/negative aspects of the hotel layout?
 There is not negative aspect of the layout except for the parking. It is way too far from the hotel, may be having shuttle would be nice.
 What do you think of the hotel’s corridor?
 Of course, the impression created by the corridor can also be the key to the guest experience. The journey to the room should not just be
as enjoyable, but should also be easy to find room and enable guest to see everything else hotel has to offer.
 What do you think about color and flooring of the hotel?
 After the renovation, instead of minimalism, the hotel uses intense, drama, purity of shape and form for aesthetic. With the introduction of
LED lighting, the ability to paint with light combined with digitally dye carpets and printed wallpapers/fabrics will wow the guests. Just like the
walls in any area, the floor needs to please the eyes as well. New tiling carpets/wood flooring/marble make the hotel luxurious and complement
the rest of the décor and design elements within each space. Work and sketches by Christopher To

Problem Statement
The client is Marigold Hotel. This hotel has mainly business clientele and people traveling for work. The plans for the hotel are detailed on the next page. The areas
to be designed are located on the first and second floor. The first floor will include a lobby and welcome space, a small bar or cafe, 12 standard rooms with either a
king bed or two double beds, 2 ADA accessible rooms, a small gift shop (footprint only, no design required), and a manager’s office. The second floor will include a
small exercise room (footprint only, no design required), and the same amount of standard and ADA hotel rooms as those located on the first floor for a total of 28
rooms. Universal design, sustainable design, and extra attention to ADA requirements will be made during the design process. The hotel’s design will attract business
travelers with special amenities and services (fitness center, desks with ergonomic seating in rooms, high speed internet, dry cleaning, and more). The design will be
modern, futeristic, and comfortable. A neutral color pallete with eye catching accents will be utilized. The warm colors will support an appetite for the hotel’s cafe and
bar. The hotel’s brand will be conveyed throughout the design, creating a mood that is sleek and modern, yet warm and inviting- a brand that supports a fast-paced
lifestyle.

Justification Statement
Code compliance, ADA compliance, and UD principles have been incorporated throughout the floorplan options. Circulation path-
ways are wide enough to accommodate the occupancy load in the event of an emergency evacuation. Doorways, bathrooms, and
sleeping spaces meet ADA while providing extra space and comfort to support the Universal Design Principles. The plans accommo-
date the functional goals of the hotel as well. To serve the target business traveler clients, the room will include a small workstation.
The hotel will also feature a computer work area on the second floor. The spacious fitness center will also be a nice amenity for trav-
elers. For people that may come into town and rent some co-working space, the hotel will offer secluded quiet workspaces for small
meetings. The design will also focus on efficiency, creating an inspirational design to keep people motivated towards their work
goals. The reception desk will be placed to oversee the front entrance to support safety and security. Security cameras will also sup-
port a safer environment. Locking safes in rooms will help keep travelers’ possessions safe. The preliminary design options all offer
great benefits, but the third option (option C) supports all functional needs of the hotel.
Custom Reception Desk and Preliminary Furniture Plans
Custom Reception- Inspiration and Sketches
The source of inspiration for the custom reception desk is inspired by the beautiful red rock
formations of Arizona. This design inspiration will fit perfectly into the design concept. The
natural rock shape, color, and texture will be blended with futuristic, modern elements to sup-
port a forward-thinking style.

Study Model

What elements can be modified to achieve better anthropometric, UD, ADA accessibility, and human factors? The simple design of the desk supports UD principles and ADA guidelines. Drawers and
storage could be added to the employee side of the desk to make it more practical and functional.
What elements can be modified to better address lighting and wayfinding? A ceiling plane with custom lighting will hi-light the desk and make it easy to notice. The desk will be noticeable from first
entry to support wayfinding.

Analysis

The custom reception desk is inspired by the red rock formations of Arizona. The nspiration is made modern and unique by relpacing the stone texture and red color
with a bright glossy white finish. The focal point of the reception design is not actually the desk, but the dark tile wall and custom light feature around the desk. These
eye-catching features make wayfinding simple while supporting the original design concept. ADA and universal design factors were strongly considered in the desk’s
design. There are 2 ADA counters, both at 34” high. These parts of the desk extend to allow extra knee clearance in a wheelchair approach. The placement of the re-
ception area supports the security plan, as the desk oversees the main entry, the elevators, and the hallway leading to the rooms.
