Census 2011: Community Profiles

Thank you for choosing the Census 2011 Community Profile databases. We hope
that you find this product useful.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

This Census 2011 Community Profile product comprises SuperCROSS software, and 13
Community Profile databases with their corresponding mapping data linked to ESRI’s ArcExplorer
software. This product is supported by a Microsoft Operating System platform and is installed via a
CD-ROM device.

The software application files and databases are automatically decompressed and installed on the
selected hard drive.

No additional licensing is needed to use the software provided.

User guides and a reference manual for the software are included in the package in pdf format (see
3.14 below)

2. REQUIREMENTS

The following minimum system requirements for operating SuperCROSS linked to ArcExplorer
software are only guidelines. Additional hardware, such as disk capacity and random access memory,
will give better performance.

2.1 Minimum hardware


- Pentium II processor
- 128 Mb RAM
- 500 Mb hard disk drive free space
- CD-ROM drive
- Colour monitor and display adapter
- Two-button mouse

2.2 Operating system


Microsoft Windows, 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000 or XP

2.3 Hard drive space details


- 132 Mb for SuperCROSS linked to ArcExplorer Software;
- 250 Mb for mapping boundaries and topographical features;
- Approximately 1.8 Gb for the Community Profile databases. The various databases can
be installed separately if the required space is not available. Alternatively they can be run
from the CD-ROM.

3. INSTALLATION

3.1 Insert the CD-ROM into CD ROM drive.

3.2 From the "Start" button, choose RUN.

3.3 From the CD, Choose "Setup.exe" and click OK.

3.4 The Census 2011 Community profile databases dialogue box will be prompted, followed by a
"Welcome" dialogue box. Read the recommendation and the Warning message and click
NEXT.

3.5 The "Licence agreement" dialogue box is prompted for using the SuperCROSS product. If
you choose to accept the agreement click on YES.

3.6 Fill in your name and company name in the "User information" dialogue box and select NEXT.

3.7 A default destination folder is prompted. Click NEXT to use the default destination folder, or
click BROWSE if you want to change the destination folder, and type the name of the folder
required.

3.8 The next dialogue box prompts you to select the software components. By default, all
SuperCROSS components are automatically selected and the required and available space is
displayed. If you want all components, click NEXT.

3.9 The database storage dialogue box will show you the list of 13 databases of the 2011 Census
community profiles. If you have 2 Mb disk space free, select all the databases. If you do not
have the required space free, select a limited number of databases according to the available
space. Select NEXT.

3.10 The mapping data installation folder will be prompted. Select NEXT to use the default folder,
or BROWSE to change the folder.

3.11 The mapping data installation dialogue box will display the list of possible hierarchies. Select
all those you wish to install and click NEXT.

3.12 The next dialogue box will display the programme folder: "2011 South Africa
Census\Community Profile\", which is the short cut to access your SuperCROSS from the
"Start" button. Click NEXT.

3.13 When prompted, insert the required CD and click OK until you have gone through all of the
CDs.

3.14 If you do not have Acrobat Reader but wish to access the SuperCROSS and ArcExplorer user
guides, select "Install Acrobat Reader" and choose FINISH. It is highly recommended that
users review the user guides and reference manuals.

4. CONTENTS OF THE DATABASES

The Community Profiles comprise 13 databases on various topics, which enable users to do cross-
tabulations and mapping on different geographical hierarchies.

4.1 Descriptive

This database covers all persons, and contains basic person variables such as highest educational
level, present school attendance and language, which can be broken down by population group, sex,
age and enumeration area type (that is, the type of area in which people live, such as tribal
settlement, commercial farm, smallholding, urban settlement, informal settlement, etc.).

The variables are:

4.2 Disability

This database covers all persons, and contains information about the disabled, which can be provided
by highest educational level, employment status, occupation, income and enumeration area type.

Disability as general health and functioning

4.3 Dwellings

This database provides information on dwellings inhabited by households, as well as annual


household income. The universe of this database is all households, including those in workers
hostels, residential hotels, student residences and homes for the independent aged. The homeless
and persons in institutions are excluded.

4.4 Education

This database covers all persons, and enables the user to cross-tabulate highest educational level
with employment status, occupation, and monthly income. (Information about present school
attendance can be found in the Descriptive database.)

4.5 Family

This database covers all persons and has information on marital status and relationship to the head of
household. (Information about whether people’s mothers and fathers are still alive can be found in the
‘Mortality’ database.)

4.6 Household goods

The data base contains information on household amenities and facilities such telephone and
televisions

4.7 Head of household

This database contains some of the same variables as Education and Labour Force, but focusing on
household heads. The variable ‘work status’ is unique to this database. (Work status describes
whether an employed person is a paid employee, a paid family worker, self-employed, an employer or
an unpaid family worker.) The universe of this database is all households, including those in workers
hostels, residential hotels, student residences and homes for the independent aged. The homeless
and persons in institutions are excluded.

4.8 Household services

This database contains information on services to households: water, energy, toilet facilities, refuse
disposal and telephone facilities. The universe of this database is all households, including those in
workers hostels, residential hotels, student residences and homes for the independent aged. The
homeless and persons in institutions are excluded. (Compare with the Persons and services
database.)

The variables are:

4.9 Labour force

This database only covers people of working age (15–65 years of age), whether economically active
or not economically active. The latter group is broken into subcategories. This database includes
industry.

4.10 Language

This database covers all persons. It is the only database including information on religion. This can be
cross-tabulated with language and highest educational level.

4.11 Migration

This database covers all persons. It contains information for migration studies, such as numbers and
citizenship of non-South African residents, and inter-provincial migration over the last five years.

4.12 Parental Survival

This database covers all persons. It contains information about marital status and relationship to the
head of household and about whether peoples’ mothers and fathers are still alive.

4.13 Persons and services

This database provides information about services to individuals rather than households. Percentages
of certain groups of persons receiving services may therefore differ from percentages of households
receiving services. The universe for this database is all persons (unlike the Household services
database).

5. METADATA

5.1

The metadata for a specific database (topic) can be accessed by right-clicking in the general
heading area of the open database, or via the Help menu.

5.3
The metadata for a specific variable may be accessed by right-clicking when the cursor is on the
name of that variable. In the case of derived variables, information about the underlying variables can
be found in the “Metadata” referred to above.

5.4
The available value set (list of options for any given variable) can be accessed by double-clicking on
the particular variable in the "Fields" dialogue box.

6. GEOGRAPHICAL HIERARCHIES

Only the field "Geography" has mappable hierarchical levels. There are five hierarchies:

The data were gathered in October 2011. Since then, there have been demographic changes in South
Africa associated, inter alia, with internal and external migration, and population growth. This means that
population profiles may have changed at differing geographic levels. Stats SA is not responsible for any
damages or losses, arising directly or consequently, which might result from the application or use of
these data.
