Chemical Reactions Lab

In this experiment, you will predict if the following metathesis or double displacement reactions will occur.
Then you will complete the reactions to see if your predictions agree. In the following table, the reactant in the
column and the reactant on the row will be combined. Predict the products and their phases. Put a square
around any product formed that would denote that a reaction has occurred.

For example, in the first square, AgNO3 will react with NaCH3COO. In a metathesis or double displacement
reaction, the cations will switch places. So, in this case, the silver ion (Ag+) will bond with the acetate ion
(CH3COO-) and the sodium ion (Na+) will bond with the nitrate ion (NO3-). Since the charges are equal, the
products are AgCH3COO (aka AgC2H3O2) and NaNO3. Using your solubility rules, determine the phase of the
products and if the reaction will occur. In this case, both products are soluble, so no reaction will occur. If there
were a solid, pure liquid (H2O) or gas product, you would place a square it. Repeat for the other combinations.

Since we have our predictions, let’s see if our predictions are true. Take your well plate and put 10 drops of
each compound in the appropriate well (see map). A reaction will be seen by formation of solid, gas, or heat.
Have your hand on the bottom of the well plate when you add the second reactant in order to tell if heat is
evolved. In the table below, note how you know if a reaction occurred. If a reaction did not occur, write NR.

Clean-Up: When you are finished, take the well place back to the waste container and pour the solutions into it.
Use as little water from the squirt bottle as possible to clean the solids out of the wells. Do NOT put any of it
down the drain.

Questions:

1. Were all of your predictions accurate? If not, which were not? Why not?

2. If aluminum bromide (AlBr3) were also used with all of these reactants, predict the products with their
phases for each of the reactions. If there is no reaction, write NR. If there is a reaction, balance the
equation.

AlBr3(aq) + AgNO3(aq) 

AlBr3(aq) + H2SO4(aq) 

AlBr3(aq) + KCl(aq) 

AlBr3(aq) + NH4OH(aq) 

AlBr3(aq) + NaCH3COO(aq) 
