General Information to Fundamentals
of electrical engineering
The fundamental principles electrical engineering form the basis of the
most varied electrical techniques applied in the modern world today. On
these grounds, they form one of the most important areas of technology
which ELWE has been offering during its extensive history.

A clear portrayal of the different issues electrical engineering are clearly laid
out in the sections TG1 and U1 respectively.

TG1 provides the lecturer with the possibility to demonstrate the technology
of various direct and alternating current applications to groups of pupils or
students on large display panels.

Section U1 concerns itself with the same components as in TG1 but with
the difference that the electrical components are incorporated into small
modules or plug-in modules enabling the student to carry out his tasks of
circuit building and testing in a completely autonomous manner.

On the following sides you will find the fundamental principles electrical
engineering including different extensions to this subject laid out in various
forms. Our system offers you the freedom to decide for yourself how you
structure your lessons. ELWE is offering you all possibilities from the panel
system for group instruction to the portable case version for individual
studies (if you want, a rechargeable battery option is available so that you
can carry out your lessons outside in the field).

Ask us, we have always got a cost-effective solution ready for you.

Due to the high output current of up to 2 A r.m.s. per phase, the EDG is
mainly used for demonstrating experiments. It also enables experiments
with the ELWE electrical combination machines.
In addition to the three-phase function (three sine-wave voltages each with
a phase angle of 120°), the generator offers seven other modes with
voltages of different waveforms. The frequency is variable from 50 mHz to
500 Hz. The instantaneous values can be "frozen" at any point. As a result,
the unit can also be used as a power function generator offering an
extremely wide range of functions.

Specifications:
Power supply: 230 V AC; 50(60) Hz

Photovoltaic
Engineering and Stand-by Supply
System description

In order to be able to install and maintain photovoltaic systems competently,

certain technical skills are required.
ELWE have developed the experimental module system "Photovoltaic
Engineering, Stand-by Supply" to help obtain these skills in a very plain and
almost autonomous way.
The experimental module system has essential advantages compared with
steady-state systems with external solar modules:

+ The whole concept of a photovoltaic system including its structure and

influences of action can be learnt entirely.
+ The experiments can be carried out at any time and independently of the
position of the sun which means that the sessions can be planned
exactly.
+ The intensity and the angle of incidence of the sunlight can be
reproduced within a short space of time at any time.
+ The system can be set up step by step which means that the functions of
individual components can also be examined.
+ Several working stations can be set up at much lower costs guaranteeing
Photovoltaic Engineering
action-oriented learning.
+ The basic equipment allows you to set up a complete photovoltaic
system in isolated operation with low voltage. A spotlight with a 500-W
halogen dimmer lamp is used instead of the sunlight.
+ The power inverter is an essential part of the supplementary equipment
because it allows you to operate 230-V equipment by means of the
photovoltaic system, too. It is possible to examine the structure and
circuit engineering of a stand-by supply system for a photovoltaic system
simply by extending the set-up with emergency lighting.

General Information to
Fundamentals of electrical engineering
Due to the increasing demands on economic efficiency, environmental
protection, flexibility, convenience and safety in the fields of housing,
functional and industrial building, the field of electrical installation and
building system engineering has continuously advanced worldwide.
Furthermore, there is an increase in the integration and networking of
various works in buildings, such as electrical installations,
telecommunications, radio and TV receivers as well as heating and air
conditioning. Vocational training and further education must also cope with
this development.
To simplify the increasingly difficult task for teachers and trainers to teach a
growing curriculum with more complex facts periodically in their entirety
with a long lasting effect, ELWE has completely revised the training system
for electrical installations, which had proved successful for decades, to
meet the latest state of the art. New components and equipment sets have
been added to include further works, i.e. ELWE supplies complete systems
and is therefore a guarantor for an innovative leadership in the field of
training systems on housing and building system engineering.

A safe control over all the basic circuits used in conventional electrical
installations still is the basis for a skilled workmanship of pioneer electrical
installations. ELWE offers components with a modern design and partially
extended functions to teach these skills. The components also allow you to
practically study the properties of modern lamps and daylight-dependent
lighting control systems, which enable a rational use of electric energy,
possible new installations and arrangements as well as a higher degree of
comfort.

Bus systems play a major role in modern electrical installations. They

enable an easier installation with a reduced number of cables, a growing
convenience and more flexibility in the case of a changing or extended use.

Programmable components also enable an analysis of status signals, a

remote control and a remote diagnosis. ELWE has designed didactically
and methodically ideal training systems which support an almost
independent study of new technologies, e.g. KNX BUS / European
Installation Bus EIB, the international standard LON and
telecommunications systems (audio and video). For a detailed description,
please see the individual catalogues. ELWE also offers comprehensive
equipment sets for all the
works on ISDN systems, radio and television receivers, fire alarm and
alarm signalling systems. Training systems for the field of protective

Tg4 Lighting
System description

Light, either natural or artificial, plays an active part in our living

environment. Electric lamps occupy the most important place amongst the
artificial or electrotechnical lighting sources. Lighting sources - either
natural or electrotechnical - are based upon the same physical effects:
thermal radiation, gas discharge and luminescence.

Electrotechnical lighting - lighting technology - is the basic prerequisite of

lighting technology. This is based on technical regulations,
recommendations and commodity criterion together with economic and
energy-efficiency aspects which must also be considered. This means that
electrotechnical lighting sources with their lighting technologies are
introduced according to the practice of developing innovative and
economic lighting solutions with a reduced demand on energy resources.

The outfit "Lighting Technology" offers the possibility to investigate and

evaluate the presently relevant electrotechnical lighting sources according
High-pressure lamp with light and temperature to their classification for the type of light generation. When developing and
measurement as well as a test panel to determine the choosing a lighting source, it is of critical importance to consider not only the
colour display Set-up with Experimental Panel Systems power in watts but even more so in maintaining a thorugh knowledge of
colour temperature and spectrum, colour reproduction characteristics,
energy balance (light emitting efficiency) and economic life-time.

The main points to be looked at when considering the different lighting

sources are i.e.: the investigation of operational behaviour during start-up,
restarting, continuous lighting mode, the effect of mains voltage fluctuation,
the power rating and the evaluation of the measurement results.

System description

House interphone system and door-station are today a necessary element

in the field of electrical installations within buildings. The conventional 1+n
technology is replaced by micro-processor controlled BUS systems.
Electricians must maintain old home telephone systems, modernise them
with a new intelligent system or project new concepts with 2 x 2 line BUS
technology.
This modern technology offers the possibility of transmitting language with
2 lines and images with 2 other lines, without requiring additional coaxial
cables. The bells, the door opener and the staircase lighting can also be
controlled via the same lines.
The extendable system is equipped with a listening and visual block and a
call tone distinction. ELWE has prepared this system methodically and
didactically for instruction purposes to practically teach the student the

KNX BUS / EIB BUS
(Europäischer Installationsbus)
System description

The KNX BUS contains a double-wire bus line and the connectable bus
devices, such as sensors, actors and system components. Sensors
receive information and transmit them as a message to the bus. Sensors
are for example push buttons or binary entries with 230 V-interfaces. Actors
receive messages and process them into e.g. connection or dim signals.
System components are necessary for the basic function of the system.
They are mainly power supplies for the bus, couplers for the connection of
bus intersections and interfaces for the connection of programmers. The
double-wire bus line transmits the energy required by the electronic
components of the bus devices as well as information and is connected to
each bus device. Usually, sensors are only connected to the bus line,
whereas actors are often connected additionally to the 230/400 V-network
in order to supply the connected devices with power. The bus line and the
power supply have to be strictly separated.
A KNX bus device consists of a bus interface (BI) and the application
module (AM). The bus interface (BI) transmits or receives data, guarantees
a stable voltage supply for the electronics and stores important data such
as its own address, one or more target addresses as well as operational
parameters of the bus interface itself .The built-in micro-controller
KNX BUS Experimental panel system
undertakes the co-ordination of these functions. The operational function of
the bus device is determined by the applicational module with its application
programme. Depending on the kind of bus device required, the bus
interface and applicational modules are supplied as plug-in or as a
seperate unit integrated in a housing. The operation of this system requires
the software "Engineering Tool Software" (ETS) and the product data bank
from the firm "Merten" who produces the unit.
The experimental panel system has been designed for demonstration
purposes. The modular structure of the experimental panel system
guarantees high security even in the long run. It is continuously updated to
meet the technical requirements of a rapidly improving KNX BUS system so
that existing sets of equipment can be updated at low cost at any time.
The board can either be used as an experimental panel in an experimental
frame, or as a table-top unit with an inclined experimental surface. All the
KNX BUS experimental panels and modules from the wide range of ELWE
KNX BUS Experimantal Board KNX BUS training systems can be combined with the board. Therefore, the
board is equipped with two separate line outputs with Western connectors.

Protection and safety accordance to VDE0100
(Fault simulator)
System description

The fault simulator is used for practical, systematic and self acting training
of how to analyse functions and how to detect, locate and eliminate faults or
failures in installations at different power systems.
The compact design, the large number of concealed programmable faults
or failures and the use of test equipment that is usually used in practical
operations, are advantages that offer an ideal basis for the use of fault
simulators in efficiency tests and examinations.

Characteristics of a fault simulator:

+ Typical faults and failures occurring in practical operation and their
effects can be vividly demonstrated and measured.
+ All of the power systems are supplied with voltage by a 230/400 V AC
three-phase system. As a consequence, all of the measurements and
examinations can be carried out with commercial meters according to
DIN VDE 0413.
+ The safety isolating transformer and 4 mm safety sockets guarantee
high safety standards for the experimenting persons.
+ Masks with clear prints of circuits and designations vividly show the
actual power system with the corresponding protective measures for
safety. The sockets that are not required for the actual experiment are
covered.
+ All of the graphic symbols and figures correspond to the up-to-date
DIN standards.
+ The compact design allows the use of the equipment at different
training locations and its transport without the necessity of additional
devices or extended set-up times.

General Information
Control Technology
From the fundamentals of regulation technology, through analogue
regulators right up to digital regulators and regulations, the application of a
PC allows a comfortable presentation of didactic and methodically
prepared teaching and learning systems for regulation technology. Clearly
represented regulator section models i.e. a liquid level regulator section, a
temperature regulator section or a motor generator rotary frequency
regulator section are all available and are completely up to date with normal
practice in regulation applications. The Experimental Panel System is
ideally suited for demonstration purposes in front of large groups of
students. The Experimental Module System, the Experimental Module
System or the Experimental Case System is recommended for
autonomous experimenting.

Parallel to the equipment and experiments in regulation technology offered

by ELWE, there is a further area of control and regulation technology which
we would like to draw your attention to at this point. You can purchase
Three-Tank-System superior products for this subject area under the product name "Amira".
Further information on the modells: three-tank-system, magnetic
suspension, ball and rocker as well as other laboratory experiments for
research and technological regulation methods can be found on the
website www.amira.de

What is WinFACT?
WinFACT represents a new modular constructed programme system
which on the one hand provides tools for analysis, synthesis and simulation
for regulation systems, on the other and most especially, it contains
components for the treatment of Fuzzy systems. Because of the graphic
user surface, WINDOWS allows for an extremely low effort in becoming
acquainted with the system and at the same time offering a high level of
user comfort. The large number of programme interfaces and data formats
allow communication with the most diverse peripheral devices, external
processors and personal software products ias well as foreign software.
Especially on these grounds alone, WinFACT is of special interest for the
areas of training, teaching, research and development.

Control technologyTG 9 / U 9
(TG = Experimental Panel System, U = Student exercises
System description

Control technology covers an area of engineering science and a branch of

the automation technology. It concerns itself with the selective iinfluence of
physical, chemical, biological or other dimensions in appliances,
equipment, vehicles or i.e. also in the human body employing the principle
of feed-back so that the behaviour of these dimensions approach the
desired behaviour as closely as possible .
It employs a systematic, mathematical model whereby the complete
automation of the procedure is quite common, occasionally however, the
process requires human involvement on the grounds of either technical
and/or economic conditions.
i.e. Adjusting either a comfortable temperature for shower water, or the
steerage control of a passenger aircraft.
Depending on the requirement, a specific procedure is necessary when
determining which regulation method should be applied.
