The Tai Qi Initiative

IT’S EASY, SAFE AND HEALTHY!
Slow, gentle movements
Deep Breathing and Focusing Exercises
That Provide Stress Relief,
Heart Health and Fun!!!!!!!!

The most important benefit gained by students who
participate in Tai Qi training is development of techniques
that help to reduce stress, resolve conflicts, and positively
express emotions, while also increasing self-confidence and
self-esteem. Students are taught,
in a safe and courteous manner,
the martial art tenets of humility, respect, righteousness, trust,
and loyalty. These tenets allow for each student to take risks
and develop to his/her fullest potential.

As a student under the direction of

Sifu Dr. Ian Noel, Karriem Shabazz, the instructor, has been
providing Tai Qi instruction to children for seven years and
has studied the art for twelve years. Mr. Shabazz is a special
educator who has taught in both public and private school
settings. During his years as an educator, Mr. Shabazz found
that through the utilization of basic meditative techniques and
movements contained within Tai Qi, that students responded positively to being
physically challenged and that their ability to focus on even the most challenging task
had improved as well.

Please come and experience a journey of self-discovery.

Tai Qi (pronounced: “chee”) Chuan (or Supreme Energy Fist) like all Kung Fu styles
exercises the student’s physical, intellectual, spiritual, and self-defensive capacities.

Physically, Tai Qi develops flexibility and coordination, increases circulation and

metabolism, and when practiced more quickly, allows for improved cardio vascular
development. As an Intellectual exercise, Tai Qi promotes relaxation, awareness, and
focus. Practice at this level requires intense concentration in order to split the awareness
between the breath or intake of Qi and body’s position as one moves. As the body calms
the spirit frees which allows the attention normally placed on the body to focus instead on
the "Here and Now". At this stage Tai Qi becomes a dance of the spirit where the player
communes directly and intuitively with nature and the natural self. Lastly, Tai Qi
contains hidden postures or movements that can be used for self-defense to protect
against attackers. Overall Tai Qi can be seen as a complete art that benefits both the
mental and physical well being of the participant.
