Path work of Mathatical Chaos

Start from bottom up
We will start with the top two

Mathematics of movement was historically hindered by misconceptions about how and why
objects move

Going over the misconceptions survey

Density = mass over volume. the quantity of mass per unit volume. Characteristic of material

Assighment: If the moon is made of the same material as the earth why doesn’t Fg increase
since r is smaller?

Locally make sense but globally doesn’t

Misconceptions: for many years in math, simple equations vs versa simple behavior /shapes
Equation to behavior
Geometric shapes gives simple equation gives simple shape
Newton’s laws of motion gives planetary orbits, three or more particles gives chaotic dynamics
Fractal geometry can leads to complicated shapes
Assignment:
A high speed video camera running at 180 frames per second was used to record a player
kicking a scoccer ball. Each

1. Determine the speed of the soccer ball after the kick

2. Calculate the time it takes the ball to cover this distance.

Misconception on motion
Started by aristotle, trying to do in the physical world as Euclid did
His methods later used in western science.

Ideas of natural world works.

Two classes of motion of objects:
1. Natural motion: proceeds from the nature of the object, it’s particular combination of the
4 elements, by picking it up, fire tend to go up objects done on its on. Moon stars moving
in circular path

2. Violent motion: external pushing, what keeps arrow move

Statics
Kinematics
Dynamics

MOtion?
Position?
We need coordinate system
dimension : 1 dimension (line) 2 dimension (x.y) 3 dimension (x,y,z)
Time: its own unit not the same as the units in position
1 d = 2, 2d = 3, 3d = 4
Distance:
Answer to: How far is it from this to that or between this and that?

Provisional def:
Ratio of distance to a specify unit

Statics by definition is the branch of physics that deals with physical systems in equilibrium, in
which no bodies are in motion, and all forces are offset or counterbalanced by other forces.

Kinematics by definition is a branch of classical mechanics that describes the motion of points,
bodies (objects), and systems of bodies (groups of objects) without considering the mass of each
or the forces that caused the motion.

Dynamics by definition is the branch of applied mathematics (specifically classical mechanics)

concerned with the study of forces and torques and their effect on motion, as opposed to
kinematics, which studies the motion of objects without reference to its causes.

We need to understand statics, kinematics, and dynamics, before we can reach mathematical
chaos. Statics by definition is a branch of mechanics that concerns with bodies at rest and forces
in equilibrium. Is the description of what and where. Kinematics by definition is a description of
motion. Dynamics is the mathematical formulation of causes of motion.

I find Aristotle very interesting in wanting to systematize knowledge of the physical world as
Euclid had done for geometry. How curiosity makes a person venture in exploring how things
work in nature. What causes a motion? All motion is due to the nature of the moving object or an
external force.

Misconceptions are due to what is not known and assuming some logical sense to make
something true. Like in the Aristotle days, since they don’t know that the celestial objects move
they think the normal state is at rest, since they cannot think that there is a large enough force to
move earth, therefore they concluded that the earth does not move.

A motion is a change in time in the position or location of something. So, a motion in math terms
would be the slope of a graph? A position is the location in a specific coordinate system with
units. In math, one dimension is a line, two dimension is on x and y coordinate plane, three
dimension is on x, y, and z plane. Time would create a different parameter in math, which adds a
dimension.

Distance is a measure between two locations and specified as a ratio relative to a standard unit.
Also, distance can be stated as time. Distance versus displacement, distance is a scalar measure
between two locations along the actual path. While displacement is a vector measure between
two locations along the shortest path. A scalar only gives a single unit, usually positive. While
vector have both magnitude and a direction.

Now, I see why we needed to go over the conversion. Speed is the rate of change of distance
with time. It is indicated with a scalar quantity with units of distance over time. Average speed is
𝛥𝑠 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
represented with 𝑉𝑎𝑉 = 𝑉̅ = 𝛥𝑡 = . Average velocity is represented with 𝑣⃗ =
𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

𝛥𝑟⃗ 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡

=
𝛥𝑡 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

I still do not understand how misconception ties in with what we will be doing in this class. It
must be important since we spend two class on this topics. The summarization of the
misconceptions were simple equations results in simple behavior/shapes and vice versa. In
science Newton’s laws of motion gives planetary orbits. When three or more particles gives
chaotic dynamics. In fractal geometry, it leads to complicated shapes.

In the first class we saw the complex equation that looked simple but the outcome of the picture
is complicated as it gets zoomed into each pieces. So, is this where the misconception comes in?
I looked forward to see how this ties in at the end.
