Abstract

In the laboratory exercise that we have conducted, we determined the density

and specific gravity of a sample liquid. By doing so, the first thing we did was to determine the
density for miscible liquid (sodium, silicate). We first weigh an empty graduated cylinder then
place the amount of sample liquid in the same cylinder then weigh again and measure the
samples temperature. For distilled water, we did the same procedure as with the sodium
silicate. Then for immiscible liquid (oil), we use a U-tube in determining the heights of water
sample and record everything we have gathered in the date sheet.
SAMPLE COMPUTATIONS:

I. FOR MISCIBLE LIQUID

a.) Density of sample, Ps = ms / vs

Ps = (151.5 / 100)1000 1520 kg/m3

b.) Density of water, Ps = ms / vs

Pw = (95.39 / 100)1000 = 953.9kg/m3

c.) Specific gravity of the sample, Gs = Ps / PW

Gs = 1520/953.9 = 1.59

d.) % Difference, %Diff = (AV-EV/AV)x 100

(1.50-1.59/1.50)100 = 0.625%

II. FOR MISCIBLE LIQUID

c.) Specific gravity of the sample, Gs = h s / hW

(0.88-0.9/0.88)100 = 1.7%
Analysis and Interpretation of
Data and Result
Based on the data sheet, for the miscible liquid, groups 3, 6, and 8’ has the highest
density and specific weight. They have gathered 1579.1 kg/m3, 157.2 kg/m3 and 1579.3
respectively. The group that gathered the least density was our group, group 7, where in the
date we gathered was 15201 kg/m3. For the immiscible liquid, group 5 has the highest specific
gravity with 0.92 while groups 3 and 4 has the least with 0.88 both. Overall, the results that we
have gathered was close from the accepted value of specific gravity, therefore, the laboratory
exercise was a success.

CONCLUSION

This lab can be considered successful as we were able to understand the principles and
instruments used in this laboratory exercise and determined the density and specific gravity of
the sample liquids.
Answer to the Following:

1.) Specific gravity is an important property of fluids being related to density and viscosity. Knowing the
specific gravity will allow determination of a fluid's characteristics compared to a standard, usually
water, at a specified temperature

2.) The liquid that will settle at the bottom would be the 1.26. In the middle, 0.95 and on top,
0.82 because the heavier the density of the liquid, it will more likely settle at the bottom

3.) Density of water, Pw = mw / vw

a.) 9.65 = mw / 1.75

mw = 16.89KN

a.) 9.65 = mw / 2.35

mw = 22.68KN

a.) 9.65 = mw / 0.86

mw = 8.3KN
