I. Intended Learning Outcome

Given varied activities the Grade 10 students with 75% accuracy will be able to:
a. identify the equation for the equilibrium of the Axial Force,
b. practice on how to solve an equation that is applied in each segment of the beam, and
c. solve and illustrate an axial force diagram.

II. Subject Matter

III. Learning Process

Prayer: Prayer Leader

A. Preparation
The teacher will have a game called “Pictoword” to introduce the topic. Pictoword is an
image based guessing game. The game shows 5 images in 1 word, and the blank square
will reveal the amount of letters in the answer we’re looking for. In 5 minutes the students
must be able to guess the topic of the day.

B. Presentation
The teacher will have a proper discussion about the Mathematical and Graphical
Presentation of Axial Force Diagram. After the proper discussion of the teacher, the
teacher will have an example to practice the students to solve the equation.

Terms to remember:
fx – Summation of Forces at x
kN (kiloNewtons) – unit of force
T – Tension
TAB, TBC, TCD – Tension of Segment AB, BC and CD
Tension – always positive and always right
Compression – always negative and always left

C. Performance
The teacher will give an axial force problem to the students that they will solve and after
they will illustrate the axial force diagram, following the basic steps to draw the axial
force diagram.

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Get 1/2 sheet of paper. Find the axial forces applied in each segment of the beam. 5
points each

1.
A B C D

15 kN 5 kN

17 kN 7 kN

2.
A B C D

15 kN 28 kN

20 kN 10kN

ANSWERS:
2. Segment AB:
1. Segment AB:
Summation of forces x = 0
Summation of forces x = 0
TAB + 38 = 0
TAB – 15 = 0
TAB = - 38 kN
TAB = + 15 kN
Segment BC: Segment BC:
Summation of forces x = 0 Summation of forces x = 0
TBC + 17 - 15 = 0 TBC + 38 - 20 = 0
TBC = - 17 + 15 kN TBC = - 38 + 20 kN
TBC = - 2 kN TBC = - 18 kN

Segment CD: Segment CD:

Summation of forces x = 0 Summation of forces x = 0
TCD + 17 - 15 – 7 = 0 TCD + 38 - 20 + 10 = 0
TCD = - 17 + 15 + 7 kN TCD = - 38 + 20 - 10 kN
TCD = + 5 kN TCD = - 28 kN
