Estrogen stimulates growth of the lactiferous ducts while progesterone stimulates growth of alveolar and secretory cells. The mammary glands are fully developed 12-18 months after menarche. During pregnancy, further development occurs in preparation for lactation. After delivery, prolactin production is stimulated by suckling and causes milk production.
