In your notebook, write the following things down for the lab.

Title of lab, purpose, materials, SUMMARY of procedure, data table, and answers to the
questions in complete sentences

What In the World….?

Many substances and solutions look the same. In chemistry, many of the compounds we use
are white powders and many solutions clear, colorless liquids. Physical properties, such as
density, can be used as one of the factors in verifying the identity of an unknown compound.

In this lab, you will determine the density of an unknown liquid to draw some conclusions about
its identity.

Procedures:
1. Put the graduated cylinder on the balance.
2. Turn on the balance with the graduated cylinder on it.
3. Measure 10 mL of the solution into your graduated cylinder.
4. Weigh the graduated cylinder with the solution in it and record this data.
5. Divide the mass of the solution by its volume to find your density.
6. Repeat using the indicated volumes.

Mass of Solution Volume of Solution Density of Solution

10 mL
20 mL
30 mL
40 mL
50 mL

Using complete sentences and thoughts, answer the following questions.

1. What is the average density of the solution?
2. Water has a density of 1.0 g/mL. Using the data collected from the lab, draw a
conclusion about the identity of the solution.
3. What are two possible reasons for using multiple volumes of the solution during the
lab?
4. Graph the data collected from this lab. Use a ruler!!!
