Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
For the ESL students within the class, drawing from the ESL library of videos can support those students as
they transition from their native language to English. This feature can also help support their parents – as
students access the videos from home, the parents and other siblings can further practice the English language.
Headphones can be provided allowing students the opportunity to listen to the video without disturbing anyone
else in the area. To further enrich the learning experience, students can re-wind and review the video as many
times as they like, allowing more opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the content.

Lesson idea implementation:
The BrainPop videos will be used to introduce the constitution and the bill of rights to the students. After the
video the teacher will lead a discussion of the videos with the students asking them of times when they have
used their rights given to them by the constitution or when they felt their rights weren’t protected. After
discussion the students will split into small groups and complete a graphic organizer that summarizes the first 10
amendments, they will be required to list and describe two facts about each of the 10 amendments. Upon
completing the graphic organizer the students will play the “Do I Have It Right?” game on BrainPop for 20
minutes while the teacher walks around and answers any questions and provides assistance where needed.

For homework the students will be asked to write two paragraphs on why the constitution is important in
protecting the rights of citizens, what some of those rights are, and how it protects them. A rubric will be proved
to support and assess the students writing.

Reflective Practice:
In order to extend this project students can continue the game outside of class with family or friends.
Student work can be posted around the school and students can apply their knowledge of the constitution
and the bill of rights in involvement around the school, perhaps by researching a current amendment that
is currently taking place.
