What most designers don’t account for

is the inherent loss in pre-charge that
occurs over time due to gas permeation
s through the bladder. Left unchecked,

u This issue is of most concern in mobile
t applications where there can be a signi-
i ficant difference in the temperature
o when the equipment is not in use (-60° to
n 100°F) and when it is at working tempera-
s ture (0° to 250°F). In that gas permeation
cannot be avoided, it needs to be fac-
tored into the application specification
and routinely checked and maintained
throughout the life of the equipment.
Applications

accumulators include:

Selection

“minimal” to “significant” depending on
the application working temperature.
Because of the vast performance differ-
ences in bladder compounds, the first
application consideration is the fluid to
be used in the system. The second is the
application temperature range.
Nitrile bladders are considered
suitable for most applications. Other
compounds are designed to provide
compatibility with a wide range of fluids,
working temperatures and gas permea-
tion requirements. To determine which
material is appropriate for a given
application, always refer to the fluid
manufacturer’s recommendation.

the bladder compound, bladder manu-
facture, and its incorporation into a fully
assembled accumulator.
Life Expectancy
Properly designed and sized for the app-
lication, and with pre-charge checked as
part of a regular maintenance schedule,
the bladder should last for the life of the
application. In that bladder accumula-
tors and the bladder compound selected
are application-specific, there is no reason
to replace a bladder unless it fails.
It is important to understand the Perme-
ability Factor of the selected bladder
material vs. the potential pre-charge
loss due to gas permeation. In Part II, we
will take a closer look at this issue and
discuss how to effectively manage the
pre-charge.
Permeability Factor
As you gain low temperature capability
in a bladder compound, permeability of
the bladder increases, and hence greater
pre-charge loss due to gas permeation at
working temperature. To show the direct
correlation (Figure 2), the permeability
potential of each bladder compound was
tested to define the relationship between
bladder compound permeability and
temperature.

Permeability Factor was determined
by rating the permeability of each com-
pound on a scale of 0 to 50 at 70°F. The
higher the factor, the faster gas pre-charge
would be lost in a low-temperature
application using that compound.
Bladder Codes for Parker accumula-
tors have been assigned to simplify com-
pound identification in manufacturing
and on through packaging, marketing,
shipment and customer use.
EPR, for example, has a low tempera-
ture limitation of -40°F, but a Permeability
Factor of 50. For comparison, a Hydrin
bladder would be four times more
permeable than that of a Nitrile bladder
in the same application. Likewise, an
EPR bladder would be 25 times more
permeable than a Nitrile bladder.
The Permeability Factor increases or
decreases with temperature, setting up
a trade-off situation for having to use a
low temperature bladder compound. If
the application requires a -40°F bladder
material because the equipment needs
to be left out in the cold overnight, the
upside is that the bladder won’t shatter
at low temperature. The downside is that
the pre-charge in the bladder will have
to be checked more often because of the
higher working temperature when the oil
warms up.
Managing Pre-Charge
When pre-charge is lost in a bladder
accumulator, it changes the available

volume in that application. Example:
Where an accumulator is sized for emer-
gency or auxiliary power, or it is sized
based on how much volume is needed
to accomplish the task, too low a pre-
charge can have rapid and severe conse-
quences. Specifically, in an emergency
situation, there would not be enough
fluid to complete the cycle, or the cycle
would slow down.
Should pre-charge continue to be
lost the point is eventually reached
where bladder damage, among other
consequences, can occur. It is Parker
Hannifin’s recommendation that the
maximum ratio not exceed 4:1 between
the maximum pressure and the pre-
charge. If, for example, the maximum
pressure is 2,000 psi, the pre-charge
should not go below 500 psi. This is the
point where damage to the bladder can
begin. For new applications, the recom-
mended pre-charge maintenance proto-
col is to:
• Check pre-charge once a month for the
first six months. If there are no problems…
• Extend the maintenance period to two
months. If there are no problems…
• Extend the maintenance period to
three months and continue the mainten-
ance extension on a monthly basis until
a pre-charge comfort level is reached for
that application.
In some applications, the working
temperatures may be sufficiently moder-
ate that pre-charge only needs to be
checked on a yearly basis.

Werklust Holland – producer of state of the art whe
s Werklust Holland is The Netherlands’ only producer of wheel loaders. Werklust
s is very happy with the outcome of the projects they started with Parker. This
successful cooperation resulted in Parker being selected for the new project
s upgrading their largest model wheel loader, which will be in production in the
t end of 2011.
o
r The company started up in 1947 when a
i forge was acquired producing agricul-
e tural machines. At first the company pro-
s duced old army vehicles with a loader
in front. Werklust received national and
international fame during the draining of
the former Zuiderzee to create new land.
Werklust kept on growing and develo-
ping new shovels and wheel loaders. On
the hydraulics side Werklust was using,
among others, Monsun-Tison / VOAC
valves. These were used successfully
due to their excellent performance and
reliablity. The link to Parker is now easily
made.

Parker designed a completely

new hydraulic system
The first contacts between Parker and
Werklust on a new project were establis-
hed in 2004 when Werklust was develop-
ing the new WG35E wheel loader. Parker
designed a completely new hydraulic
system based on Werklust’ requirements
such as: high productivity with fast
working cycles, optimal distribution of
traction power and hydraulic power, fine
controllability for finishing jobs, high
efficiency for low fuel consumption,
and low noise level. The system design
includes M200 hydraulic valve, P2-145
pump, 84 hoses, EO2 fittings, hydraulic
filtration, dedicated manifolds, pneu-
matic regulator to boost pressure on the
tank and IQAN control for the fan drive,
cooling and load sensing system. The
system was based on a single pump
design to create an optimal balance of
the available engine power between hy-
draulic functions and vehicle traction.
After one year of extensive field
testing and customer evaluation, the
successful WG35E was taken into serial
production in 2006, for which Parker
supplied the components in complete
production ready kits. Based on the per-
formance capability of the new WG35E
hydraulic system, Werklust launched a
new larger model, WG40E, equipped
with an identical hydraulic system.
Swing loaders
Parker’s total system design for the
WG35E was the prelude to the new
WG17EZ swing wheel loader. In 2008
Werklust decided to enter the market for
swing loaders in which they only face
competition from mostly German pro-
ducers. The problem Werklust faced was
a challenging one: how to build a swing
loader with articulated steering and a
power shift transmission. These kinds of
systems are common on regular wheel
loaders, but unusual for swing loaders.
Werklust’s largest competitor uses a
hydrostatic transmission and 4-wheel
steering for their swing loaders.
The goal of the power shift trans-
mission was clear: to increase traction
power, driving speed, and efficiency.
Articulated steering makes a more
compact machine with a smaller turning
circle. Strong rigid axles eliminate the
need for more sensitive steering axles.
The hydraulic system of the swing loader
provides perfect control of the loading
arm and the swing arm at the same time.
In addition, the WG17FZ was designed
to be a multi-functional machine allow-
ing the easy use of a variety of auxiliary
equipment and tools, such as a stone
clamp, sweeper, crane, etc.
The Parker design
The Parker design for the WG17EZ was
based on a 2-pump system, a P2-75 for
the main system and a P1-45 for steering
the swing arm. It is necessary to have 2
pumps, as they should be able to work
independently of each other and support
each other as well. For the brake and
cooling system, a separate gear pump
is used. In the cooling system there is a
continuous bypass filtration in place. The
main valve features a K170LS with inte-
grated function manifolds, which allow
the swing loader to lift and tip, and also
includes a third and fourth auxiliary sec-
tion as standard. An integrated manifold
arranges the boom suspension system,
which makes sure you can easily drive on
uneven roads with a loaded vehicle. The
load suspension system can be manually
or automatically activated through the
IQAN CANBUS module at speeds above
7 km/h.
The IQAN system
One of the key features of the Parker
system is the revolutionary IQAN control
system featuring CANBUS. The IQAN
system controls all functions of the swing
loader: traction, swinging, lifting, etc. The
control communicates directly with the
transmission and ECU of the John Deere
6.8 L DPS motor and ZF transmission.
Parker engineered the IQAN system for
Werklust and took care of programming
the functionality of the machine.
The IQAN system also contributes to

el loaders
the safety of the vehicle. The position of
the loading arm, the swinging angle and
pressure are constantly monitored to
prevent the loader arm from hitting the
tires. Overload protection and automa-
tic load-dependent rear-axle locking,
add stability during swing operation. In
addition, the end of stroke damping of
the loading arm cylinders are managed
electronically, so the loading arm, life
and swing arm won’t hit the stroke end
with too high a speed.
Other extra features provided by
IQAN include: reversible fan (to blow
dirt out of the cooler), load weighting
and automatic motor stop at idle. Signal-
ling of system failure, monitoring fuel
consumption and engine/transmission
performance, daily tracking of working
hours, km., retrieving relevant system
information from the vehicle that can
be used to optimize the working of the
swing loader, are all optional in basic
IQAN application software – and easily
selectable at production.
But above all the IQAN module allows
the driver optimal and easy operation of
his vehicle.
Fluid handling
For fluid handling, the swing loader is
equipped with Parker Dry Technology
EO2 connections and the new Parker
Compact Spiral Hose. The swing loader
is a compact vehicle with a confined
space for hose routings. The compact
spiral hose is very flexible, has a very
small bend radius, ideal for thigh space
in this type of machine. Thanks to the
small bending radius, shorter hoses can
be used, which has the advantage that the
hoses won’t extend outside the vehicle.
This of course will cause much less
damage to the hoses and gives the driver
a much better view of his loader.
A compact design from Parker
The hydraulic system has been extensive-
ly field-tested on a prototype vehicle.
Werklust has toured the prototype to
many customers for testing under their
working conditions. All test users gave
their feedback, and comments on a
checklist. Based on these reviews, Werk-
lust asked Parker to change some minor
details in the design, but overall the
users were very enthusiastic about the
operation of the vehicle and all options
that can be utilized. One of the test drivers

operator productivity. The right training
is critical. The way work is planned and
sequenced also has an important role to
play. Fundamentally, however, operators
will only be able to produce their best if
they are working in an environment that
is comfortable, safe and convenient. In
recognition of this, machine designers
have recently taken big steps to improve
the ergonomics of their vehicles.
As in other aspects of vehicle design,
the selection of hydraulic components
and systems has an important role to
play in operator comfort and efficiency.
Many important advances in machine
control and ergonomics have been
driven by new generations of integrated
electronic controls for hydraulic systems.
By separating the operator interface from
the hydraulic valves, these systems
give designers the freedom to design
controls in the best interests of the ope-
rator, without the constraints of accom-
modating valves, manifold blocks and
other components inside the cab.
Modern instrument panels ensure quick, simple
and efficient operation.

The indoor area

Parker had booths in three halls and in
the outdoor area on the trade fair premi-
