We are blessed in this County with some of the best events, venues, experiences, sites and
traditions and, for me, there is no better example than the Goodwood Estate. Motor racing,
aviation, horse racing and golf alongside stunning architecture and warm hospitality. The
Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of the highlights of the calendar and so it is a privilege
to launch the first of what I hope will become an annual dinner – A Celebration of Speed – in
recognition of the Festival that starts tomorrow.

Celebration of Speed is an opportunity for
A those - with a passion for fast cars, bikes and
boats, who value intelligent and interesting
conversation - to come together for a good night out.
I am delighted to welcome our special guests this
evening – our host Suzi Perry and our racing driver Kenny
Bräck. They have both enjoyed enormous success in
their respective careers and it is a great privilege to have
them with us.
This evening couldn’t have been put together (in the
five months since we had the idea) without the help of
a lot of people. At the risk of sounding like an Oscar
acceptance speech for a best supporting actor role, I
would like to express my gratitude to some important
people for their contribution to this evening.
There’s an old saying in the advertising world that you
should ‘never fall in love with your own idea’ as you’re in
danger of following it blindly when no one tells you it’s
actually not very good. Some though, say you need to
fall in love to have the passion to make it work. Thank
you to everyone who helped me with sanity checking
the idea, for recognising my passion and encouraging
me to make it happen.

and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and I am delighted that

have such an important and effective role in reaching
and treating people quickly and we all owe a debt of
gratitude to them for the hard work they do. I hope
this evening will be the start of a long and productive
relationship with them as our chosen charity.
And finally to you, the guests this evening - and it
would be pretty quiet without you - thank you for coming
tonight and for supporting the evening. I hope you have

S uzi Perry was the first permanent female anchor of BBC One’s Formula 1
coverage, then in 2016 she returned to the world of motorcycle racing
when she joined the BT Sport team as channel ambassador and host of
the Moto GP and Speedway GP series.

Travelling the world to report from trackside and speaking to the biggest
names in motorsport for more than two decades truly makes her the ‘Queen
of the Pit Lane’.

It’s not all about wheels and petrol though. Suzi’s other sporting credits
include the BBC’s live coverage of Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, the London
Marathon, the Trooping of the Colour, the London Olympics, the great North
Run and the University Boat Race.

Growing up surrounded by music (her Dad was a leading band manager,

booking agent and venue promoter and her godfather was a founding
member of Whitesnake), Suzi has a deep love for radio and live performances.
She is regularly called upon to cover the early breakfast show on BBC Radio
2 and following a hugely positive response from the audience she has also
covered the drive time show and fronted a documentary looking at the music
playlists of the world’s leading Formula 1 drivers.

She has numerous other television credits and regularly contributes articles
to leading newspaper and motorsport publications.

KENNY BRÄCK

Kenny Bräck is a highly respected and successful

racing driver – a brave man with a story to tell.

After almost a decade of successful racing in Europe, only losing the FIA
F3000 Championship after a penalty in the final race, Kenny became IRL
champion in only his second season in the USA before going on to win the
Indianapolis 500 in 1999. Kenny would no doubt prefer not to be remembered
for setting another less desirable record at the Texas Motor Speedway in
2003. In a devastating accident his car collided with Tomas Scheckter and
crashed into fences and barriers and the impact measured an unbelievable
214g. An even more incomprehensible statistic is that Kenny’s body, normally
a slender 10 stone 12 pounds, would at that moment have weighed 14 and
a half tons. Nobody had ever survived an impact that severe and he was
unconscious for days.

A measure of the bravery of the man is that less than 2 years later, after
intensive rehab, he made a comeback at the highest level, substituting for
an injured driver in the 2005 Indy 500. Kenny has been a regular at both the
Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Revival meetings, recording records
for the Hill Climb and thrilling crowds with his racing style and ability. His
career is a fascinating insight into the world of Motorsport. Most recently
Kenny has been engaged by McLaren as a test and development driver and
he will share an insight at the Celebration of Speed into their preparation

Festival of Speed, where it became the fastest road car

to tackle the Goodwood Hill.

BREAKING O
ver the past eleven months, as the five P1
LM production cars have been built, the
identical prototype XP1LM road car has
been testing. During the final phases at Nürburgring
Nordschleife, XP1LM achieved a fastest lap of 6.43.2.
After setting this new lap record, the car then drove
directly from Nürburgring back home to the UK.
This project is the latest collaboration between
Lanzante and Kenny Bräck. Kenny Bräck is known
for his 1999 Indianapolis 500 win, 1998 Indy racing
win, and recent gold medal at the 2009 rally-x
during the x-games. Lanzante first became globally
synonymous with the McLaren name when it ran the
semi-works Mclaren F1 GTR that won the 24 Hours
of Le Mans in 1995.
The project also received support from McLaren,
and Pirelli who made a specific size and compound
road legal Trofeo tyre for the P1 LM.
The P1 LM road car is intended to be the quickest,
rarest, and last of the P1 variants.
All five P1 LMs are sold, and will be used in the
USA, Japan, UAE and the UK.
Lanzante and Kenny Bräck shall be allowing
journalists to experience the P1 LM production car
at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where

MCLAREN P1 LM SETS they will also host a live talk about their Nürburgring
achievements.

the owner of the Hesketh 308, Mr Fred Fatien, for generously

McLaren MP4 / 31A - 004

The McLaren MP4-31 was designed by

McLaren to compete in the 2016 Formula
One season. The car was driven by 2005 and
2006 World Drivers’ Champion Fernando
Alonso and 2009 World Champion Jenson
Button, and reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne,
who replaced Alonso at the Bahrain Grand DK Motorsport are experts in FIA Championship winning historic
Prix following the Spaniard’s accident at
the Australian Grand Prix which deemed
him unfit for the next event. The car used
W restoration and racing. WDK Motorsport has been successful from
the start, when they ran just seven cars for their clients. Word quickly
the Honda RA616H power unit, the second spread and they have more than 60 cars now on their books, owned by racers
engine developed by Honda since their from the UK, continental Europe and the USA. Formula 1 is their speciality
return to the sport with McLaren in 2015. and the team have prepared cars from many marques of the three-litre era,
1966-1985. More than a dozen chassis were run in events on both sides of the
Atlantic in 2015 alone with Nick Padmore winning the prestigious FIA Masters
Historic F1 Pre-’78 Championship in a Lotus 77 rebuilt and run by WDK and

TOM BEST
AUCTIONEER
We are delighted to welcome Tom Best this evening
who will be conducting the live auction for us.

Tom is a specialist in Impressionist & Modern and Post-War & Contemporary

Art and qualified as a Christie’s auctioneer in 2012, setting the bar as one of
the youngest to take to the rostrum in the company’s long history.

However, in 2016 moved by the escalating crisis in Syria, Tom took a step
away from the art world to join the humanitarian charity Start Network where
he works today.

Still addicted to auctions, Tom continues to take charity fundraisers, travelling

extensively across the globe and has so far helped raise over £10 million for
selected causes.

40th ANNIVERSARY WATCH

One of the enduring icons of the golden era of Formula 1, James

Hunt was the rockstar racing driver and playboy who, along with
Nikki Lauda, was also one half of one of the greatest rivalries in sport.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hunt’s 1976 Championship

winning season, TAG Heuer have collaborated with the Hunt estate
and the late champion’s son Freddie Hunt, himself a racing driver, to
produce a pair of limited edition timepieces that were launched at
the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year.

The limited edition piece features a black sunray dial and red, white
and yellow stripes emblazoned across the face - the same colours that
appeared on Hunt’s racing kit and helmet - while the underside of the
case features the watch’s limited edition number along with Hunt’s
signature.

This is one of only 500 ever commissioned by Tag Heuer and has
been generously donated by Burrells of Winchester.

There is also a Silent Auction of some really interesting and original lots
available to you this evening – ranging from signed memorabilia
and fine art, to sporting and cultural experiences.

Amongst them you will find photographs and
graphics signed by the late Sir Roger Moore, Enzo
Ferrari and Sir John Surtees, as well as a very rare
limited edition print of the England 1966 World Cup
winning team signed by all the players, including the
late Bobby Moore. There are signed prints by Leigh
Halfpenny, Michael Schumacher, Matt Dawson and
Pele. There’s even an Anthony Joshua signed boxing
glove.
There are opportunities to go fly fishing on the
Test and have lunch at The Greyhound, spend a
couple of nights in Barcelona and see a game at the
Nou Camp from a VIP area, be a guest of BT Sport
at a Champions League game in the UK, to drive the
Nürburgring, go to The Masters Golf in Augusta or

silent auction before, it is very simple. On the iPads
available on your table you can browse all the lots
at your leisure and if you want to make a bid, just
register your details and your bid and watch to see
if you are the highest bidder. If you are outbid at
anytime you can make another bid. When the auction
ends at 11pm the highest bidder will be displayed on
the screen.
You will notice that all the lots have a reserve price
to cover costs. Your bid should match or exceed that
reserve please.
