Information relative to the maintenance, alignment and Procurement of replacement parts can be found in the KT 79 Maintenance/Overhaul Manual, KPN 006-5534-00, 1.2 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION The King KT 79 is a panel mounted transponder designed to fulfill the role of the airborne beacon equipment according to the requirements of the Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System CATCRBS).. The KT 79 features an all solid state transmitter with microprocessor control and LSI encoding circuitry. Mode and code selection are performed by tvo concentric knobs, and all functions including flight Level altitude are presented on a gas discharge display. When the KT 79 receives Mode A interrogation from the ground radar facility it will transmit a coded group of pulses which consist of @ four digit number that has been assigned by the Air Traffic Controller, This code is entered into the KT 79 by the pilot and is transmitted back to the ground as a Mode "A" reply. This coded information is presented on the ground radar display at the appropriate range and azimuth. The Air Traffic Controller can then identify each aircraft that is transponder equipped by its distinet coded nunber. The KT 79 also provides Mode "C" or altitude reporting information. When the KT 79 is operated in the "ALT" Wode and used in conjunction with an encoding altineter the flight level altitude is displayed in addition to the transponder code, and altitude information is transwitted to the ground in response to Mode "C" interrogations. A VER programming sequence, described in Section 3, allows the pilot to preprogram any single code such 1200" into the KT 79. Pressing the VFR button instantly returns the KT 79 to the preprograned code Without having to turn any other knobs. The "IDT" button, when pressed, causes the KT 79 to transmit an additional special ident pulse. This pulse is seen on the controllers radar display along with the transponder code to insure positive identification. A test mode is also included in the KT 79 to confirm that the unit is operating properly. ‘The KT 79 version is 066~1053-00, 1.3 TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS SPECIFICATION CHARACTERISTIC TSO COMPLIANCE: care ‘50 CATEGOR| Class 18 ENVIRONMENTAL CATEGORIES (0-160) Tenperature/ALtitude stot 20°C to +55°C/50,000 Ft. GENERAL Figure 3-1 shows the control panel and display of the KT 79. NOTE THE KT 79 AND ALL OTHER AVIONICS, SHOULD GE TURNED OFF BEFORE STARTING THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE(S) . 3.441 FUNCTIONAL MODES Off ~ The unit is not energized. 8. Standby - The unit is energized, but is inhibi: is enunciated on the display in this node. fed from replying to any interrogations. "say" On = The unit is able to reply to Mode A and Mode ¢ interrogations, but the altitude information of @ Mode C reply is suppressed. "ON" is enunciated on the display in this node. D. Altitude Enabled - ALL information pulses are supplied in both Mode A and C replies. This is ‘the normal mode of operation. “ALT” is enunciated on the display in this mode. Test - Allows the pilot to evaluate the integrity of the unit. ALL display segnents shold illuminate in this mode. Transmissions are suppressed. Mode selection is accomplished by rotating the outer knob (Node Select). 3.4.2 IDENT Depressing the "IDT" pushbutton causes the special ident pulse to be appended to Mode A replies for o Period of approximately 23-5 seconds. During this period, "IDT" is illuminated on the KT 79 display and ‘the ident symbol appears at the aircraft's location on the ground controller's screen. An input pin is Provided on the rear connector to provide for an external ident pushbutton on the aircraft contol. yoke. 3.1.3 10 cove The identification code for the aircraft is displayed in the right hand position of the display (1200 in Figure 3-1). Note that beneath each digit is a triangular pointer. The pointer designates which digit WiLL be incremented or decremented when the inner Knob (Inc/Dec) is rotated clockwise or counterclockwise. The pointer is rotated from left to right by pressing the Inc/Dee knob against its spring loaded switch. Thus when a pilot wishes to enter an 1D code, he can do so by rotating and depressing @ single knob. After five seconds have elapsed since an Inc/Dec operation or pointer advance, the following occur: A. The pointer returns to the Leftmost position. The new code is uritten into nonvolatile memory so that the code wiLL not change during power interruption. ©. The transponder circuitry is given the new code for transmission to the ground. This delay precludes the transmission of erroneaous codes during the 10 code entry process. Depressing the "IDT" pushbutton terminates the five second delay. CODE 7700 IS SELECTED FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY. 3.4. VER Depressing the VFR pushbutton causes the preprograt entered. wed VER code to supercede whatever code was previously The VER code is programmed by the following sequence: As Place the unit in "s8¥". B. Dial in the desired VER code (for instance, 1200). C. Depress the VER pushbutton while holding the IDT pushbutton in its depressed position. This sequence places the new VFR"code in nonvolatile memory for subsequent call up. 3.4.5. REPLY The reply indicator ('R" illuminates in the display when the transponder is replying to valid interrogations. During test mode the reply indicator should fail to illuminate if @ receiver fault is detected. 3.1.6 ALTITUDE DISPLAY ‘The KT 79 is the first generat aviation transponder to provide continuous Flight Level altitude display. Flight Level (FL) is a term used to indicate that the altitude under consideration is not true altitude, but barometric altitude which has not been corrected for Local pressure. The display is in hundreds of feet, for example, "FL_040" corresponds to an altitude of 4,000 feet, meaning sea level pressure of 29.92 inches of mercury. This information is intended for use only as coarse redundacy for the primary altitude measuring systen. Flight Level altitude information is displayed only when altitude reporting is enabled "ALT" mode) « This is so the display reflects only that information which is being transmitted to the ground. Ih addition, an invalid code from the altimeter is detected by the decoding circuitry and indicated on the Gisplay by dashes appearing in the altitude window. Altitude reporting will be disabled under this, condition.
