Registration

What is a vocal register?


A range of tones in the human voice produced by a particular vibratory pattern of the
vocal folds
Pulse/Creak/Fry/Strohbass
Vocal folds are very short, but
Air comes through in little pops of air
Used for lowest notes or sometimes for effect
Chest/Modal/Heavy Mechanism
Vocal folds are short and taut
Air comes through in broad, wavelike action
Used in mid to low range singing
Head/Loft/Light Mechanism/Falsetto
Vocal folds are stretched long, thin, and taut
Air comes through in quick, short waves
Used in mid to high range singing
Whistle/Flageolet/Flute
Vocal folds are stretched long thin and taut
Only the back of the vocal folds vibrate, making the highest pitches more acceptable
Used for highest range singing

Thyroarytenoid contracts
