Project: ​Animal Block Prints

Objective​: To introduce students to linoleum block printing processes, and practice our drawing
skills.

I Can​:
- Draw an animal and transfer it to a linoleum block.
- Carve my negative space out safely, leaving the positive space to print.
- Print 5 good prints to create an edition.
- Follow all directions to create a safe work environment.

Materials​:
- Paper, pencils, sharpie markers, linoleum blocks, block carving tools, paper plates,
brayer, printing ink

Academic Language​:
- Printmaking: a form of art that allows the artist to make multiple prints of the same image
- Relief printing: a type of printmaking where ink is rolled onto a raised surface, creating
the design
- Brayer: ink roller
- Negative space: where there is no design
- Positive space: where the design exists
- Edition: a series of prints that are the same

Procedures (Appx. 6-8 class days)​:


Day 1​:​ ​The class will learn about the process of relief printing. Students will begin by drawing
their animals onto a sheet of paper.
Day 2-3​: The class will finish drawing their animals and will transfer their drawings onto their
linoleum blocks. After they have finished transferring their designs, they will trace them in
sharpie marker.
Day 3-6​: The students will learn how to safely and effectively carve their linoleum block. They
will carve their designs, considering the positive and negative space.
Day 6-8​: Students will print an edition of 5 good prints for their final project.
