Dear Parents and Guardians,

I’m excited to introduce our Flexibility Unit during the next four weeks. Flexibility is defined as
the range of motion of a single joint or a series of joints (American College of Sports Medicine).
Types of flexibility include: active, passive, static, ballistic, dynamic, PNF, and yogic. Flexibility
is an often-overlooked aspect of fitness and it is important for our students to gain an
understanding of the benefits of maintaining flexibility throughout life. During the next four
weeks, students will have the opportunity to explore movement in Yoga, Tai Chi, and Pilates.
Each activity will focus on gaining an understanding of flexibility practices while maintaining a
proper breathing pattern.
During our flexibility unit, students will:
 Participate in a variety of age-appropriate flexibility activities. SHAPE Standard 1
 Apply terminology learned during class to proper movement sequences. SHAPE
Standard 2
 Gain an understanding of how maintaining flexibility can improve the quality of life.
SHAPE Standard 5
 Increase levels of cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. UTAH Standard PST 1.1, 1.3

This unit is centered around giving students the opportunities to explore flexibility and finding
ways to incorporate this into their future workouts. One of the homework assignments that will
be given the first day of the unit includes participating in 3 hours of flexibility activities outside
of school. An easy way for parents to get more involved is to participate in the activities with
your student(s). The three hours can be split in any way you choose. Students have until the last
day of the unit to turn this assignment in. Participating in six 30-min flexibility sessions is a
simple way to achieve this goal. Another assignment the students will have is to create their own
workout and applying components of flexibility. Ask your student to lead you through their
workout. This is a fun way to see what we’ve been working on it class.
Again, the purpose of this unit is for students to explore flexibility and find activities that they
enjoy and will continue to participate in the future. If you have any questions, feel free to email
me. Here’s to a great unit!
Thanks,
Alex Walker
