Second Saturday Bird Walk Report February 10, 2018 at Rocky River Nature Center Report
Description: Highlights included two Barred Owls and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers. While we
were in the parking lot at our regular meeting location, we were visited by many, many Canada
Geese. Waves of Geese flew over numbering over 200, "honking" loudly as they flew over. The
trails were snow covered, but not slippery. The 15 observers were treated to several special
birds, including two Barred Owls and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers. Both species were seen
by all birders and we all had good looks at the birds. The Barred Owls were a treat to all. We
also had several close looks at the resident Beaver. The Black-capped Chickadees continued to
arrive in good numbers and enjoyed being hand fed. The smiles on the faces of those feeding
the Chickadees warmed the birders around them. The weather was not an issue, no wind, but it
was cloudy. The birds were not very numerous but it was a good outing for a February walk. We
did have some competition from a program at the Nature Center, Birds of Prey program.
