Setting
The setting of the novel Good Bye Mr. Chips is a Victorian Grammar School named Brookfield.
It is an old institution and the main character Mr. Chips is professor at Brookfield. The time
represented in this novel is World War 1 as the bombs drop and classes are still going on as
stated in few chapters.

Plot
This novel is about Mr. Chips who is a professor at Brookfield. He is an old professor and strong
in his belief and discipline. He was completely changed when he married a young girl named
Katherine. His views were changed and he became soft hearted. The she died and he was left
only with her memories.

Theme
The theme of this novel is that people can be much different than what they appear to be in the
first appearance so it is not good to judge someone by their first appearance.

Characters
Mr. Chips
Mr. Chips is an old professor at Brookfield. He loves Greek and Latin works along with
detective novels. He is a legend at school and is regarded that he is the Brookfield himself. He
taught many boys at school and he dies dreaming of all the boys he taught.

Mrs. Wickett
Mrs. Wickett is a landlady. Mr. Chips lives at her house

Katherine Bridges Chipping


She is a young energetic girl with totally new and modern ideas. When she marries Mr. Chips,
she changes him completely through her new and modern ideas. She dies during child birth.
Ralston
Ralston is a new headmaster of the Brookfield. Ralston and Mr. Chips don’t like each other
because of difference in their ideas and thinking.

Dr. Merivale
Dr. Merivale is Mr. Chips physician. He comes for medical checkup of Mr. Chips and advises
him to take care of himself.
