Lesson Sequence:
Lessons #1 Bowl Making

Students are shown a series of slides showing the range of possibilities of bowl forms. Slides de-
pict both student work and contemporary ceramics. Materials are distributed. Using a pinch pot
method and press mold method, student create their own bowl form. The second day, students
re-visit the bowl to address the surface and expressive aspects. They are shown techniques of
attaching (slip and score) painting with contrasting slip colors (white on red) carving with vari-
ous line weight (sgrafitto) and a variety of other surface techniques such as burnishing or stamp-
ing. The bowls are dried and bisque fired. In the third learning activity of this lesson, the stu-
dents will glaze their bowls. A lesson on glazing is given and students spend time applying the
glaze. Pieces are then fired a final time. The work is reflected on in a peer critique.
Key Questions:
 Did the students utilized skills with their chosen material to create a functional object?
 Were they able to add or embellish their bowl?
 Were they able to communicate through motifs or markings on the surface of their bowl?
 Did they gain experience with the material?
