Course 1. To impart knowledge about offshore renewable energy conversions systems
Objective 2. To learn about wind and solar energy
Course Outcome Students will be able to
1. understand the basics of wind and tidal energy
2.explain all the parameters related to offshore wind energy systems
3. explain all the parameters related to Ocean and wave energy systems
4. understand the fundamentals of tidal energy
5. understand the fundamentals of geo thermal energy
6. analyze various offshore energy conversion systems.

Unit 1 INTRODUCTION 12hrs


Global and National Energy Mix and Outlook. Introduction to Renewable Energy Technologies and current status of
renewable sector. Long term supply demand energy trends in global market. Need for offshore renewable energy.
Offshore Technological Options available – wind energy, ocean energy - tidal, wave, geothermal, hydroelectric
power; the challenges of selecting and introducing new technologies. Geographical locations of off-shore energy
systems and a case-study.

Unit 2 OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY 12 hrs


Near shore and offshore wind energy; fundamental of wind turbine; site selection and placement wind energy
resources. Wind energy utilization technology. Commercial development of wind energy, scale and link to grid;
economic study of floating wind farms;

Unit 3 OCEAN AND WAVE ENERGY 12 hrs


Introduction to Ocean Current, ocean thermal energy, wave energy and other technologies for OTEC systems.
Recent OTEC developments: Origin and characteristics of ocean waves. Wave energy conversion technologies.
Future utilization of wave energy. Origin and characteristics of ocean waves. Wave energy conversion technologies

Unit 4 TIDAL ENERGY 12hrs


Tidal Energy: Nature and characteristics of tides. Tidal-energy resources. Tidal energy utilisation technologies.
Major operational and potential schemes. Tidal-current. Risk Assessment for the Installation And Maintenance
Activities of a Low-Speed Tidal Energy Converter. Tidal energy utilization technologies. Major operational and
potential schemes for Tidal-current.

Unit 5 OFFSHORE GEOTHERMAL ENERGY 12hrs


Offshore geothermal energy – origin and potential, types and resources of geothermal energy. Utilization of
geothermal energy for power generation, Commercial development of geothermal power generation
