Used to/would

We use used to and would to talk about repeated actions in


the past.

When I was young, I would go to the cinema every week.


When I was young, I used to go to the cinema every week.

We can also use the past simple:

When I was young, I went to the cinema every week.


Used to/would
We can also use used to to do about states that have changed
from the past to now.

When I was young, I used to have short hair.


I didn't use to live in Spain.

We can also use the past simple but we cannot use would:

When I was young, I had short hair.


I didn't live in Spain.
Past continuous + always

We can also use a past continuous with always


especially if we are talking about irritating things.

My brother was always telling me scary stories.


My friends were always getting me into trouble with
the teachers.
Narrative tenses

We use narrative tenses when we are telling a


story/describing incidents in the past.

* past simple
* past continuous
* past perfect simple/continuous
Narrative tenses
* past simple – to describe the main actions in the
story.

* past continuous – to give the background and to


describe actions in progress.

* past perfect simple/continuous – to talk about past


events that happened before another event in the
past.
