Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Principle III: Provide Multiple Means of Engagement
Being able to use KidsHealth, it provides students with the facts that they may not know about tobacco, and
informs them on current trends such as Hookah, and Vaping. Most students who are currently active in
smoking and tobacco usage, just started, and there are action plans here that will help you plan out how to
quit the addiction Most students at the highschool level have been taught “say no to drugs” and that “tobacco
is bad” but being able to understand exactly why it is, what’s in the product and what it can cause later down
the road is important information this website explains.

Lesson idea implementation: Standard one is used in my lesson, as students will be able to analyze
information and be able to acknowledge why tobacco is not a safe behavior to be practicing in. I will start my
lesson by doing a “reality check” to see where students stand on tobacco and the usage in their schools. I will
select 5-10 papers to read (depending on the amount of participation) and let students join in on conversation
on what they think about the paper just read.

Next, there will be a kahoot quiz. This will allow students to bring out their phones, and participate in a quiz
with their classmates. I will have a powerpoint as well with statistics, and information on smoking,
secondhand smoke, and vaping trends. Lastly, I will end with a group PSA skit. Doing this skit, students will be
in groups around 5-7 students and will have to provide 3 facts about tobacco, and reasons that their peers
should be tobacco free. Kids health is perfect for this, there is information on vaping, is it safe to vape around
other people and is that second hand smoking, while also having information on chew less and regular
cigarette smoking information. There is also a section that explains what addiction is, and that nicotine is
actually in use mainly in vaping, so that isn’t a healthy alternative.

Reflective Practice: This lesson allows students to traditionally learn via PowerPoint, and also there are
lessons that allow students to think (kahoot quiz) and also be creative while using resources such as
KidsHealth to find information and facts to be able to create a creative skit.
