Tokyo Story Film Notes: Group Presentation

 Straight scenes
 Allows the audience to focus on the setting
 Beauty is found in being still and taking in everything
 Cannot serve parents beyond the grave
 Blood is not always thicker than water (daughter-in-law was the nicest of the children even
though she wasn’t related by blood)
 Grandchildren were not only rude to the grandparents; just meeting them for the first time
 Asian culture: way more pressure to take care of parents
o Relationships that are the most important are the vertical (parents, grandparents,
children)
 Japan in 1953: mixture of old traditional values and the modernization of the nation
 Less focus on family and tradition and more focus on work (English being studied)
 Life isn’t fair
