1 Cooling Systems
Typical the WDP100-AL gutter system is used in combination with CELdek® 7090 evaporative cooling
pads and Euroemme® extraction fans. The function of the WDP100-AL is to keep the CELdek® pads in
place and provide a suitable means of distributing the water through the pads. These can be installed in
different ways to provide cooling solutions to various types of structures as depicted below. The
diagrams depict structures as seen from above with the relative placement of Euroemme® extraction fans
and CELdek® evaporative cooling pads:
1. A tunnel ventilated structure with two pad sections, as typically used in livestock structures
2. A tunnel ventilated structure with three pad sections, as typically used in livestock structures
3. A double tunnel ventilated structure with two pad sections, as typically used in livestock
structures
4. A cross ventilated structure with one pad section, as typically used in greenhouses or some
livestock structures

2 CELdek
2.1 Calculating the number of pads required
CELdek 7090 is designed to give optimum performance when the air speed through the pad is 1.5m/s.
When the design is done correctly, the pressure drop across a 100mm thick pad will be 20Pa.
Determining the size and number of pads required can be done in three easy steps
Step 1: Calculate the pad area required
For each 1000m3/h of air passing through the pads 0.185m2 of pad is required. The required pad
area can be calculated by using the following formula:
Area = (0.185 / 1000) x (total air flow through the pad)
Step 2: Calculate the length and height of the pad section
Choose either the length or the height of the pad section and calculate the other one by using
either one of the following formulas:
Length = Area / pad height, or:
Height = Area / pad length
Step 3: Round dimensions to fit pad sizes

WDP100-AL

Round the length or height to fit the pad dimensions and calculate the number of pads required.
Step 4: Determine ordering quantities
List the number of pad that needs to be ordered.

Example 1
A poultry house is fitted with 10 x Euroemme EM50 extraction fans. Under the particular circumstances
each extracts 35,000m3/h from the structure. How much CELdek pads are required if the pads are going
to be installed in two sections as in Figure 1A above? For practical reasons the owner of the structure
would like to install 1.5m high pads.
Step 1: Determine the pad area required
Total airflow through the pads = 10 x 35,000 = 350,000m3/h
Pad area required = (0.185 / 1000) x 350,000 = 64.75m2
Pad are per section = 64.75 / 2 = 32.38 m2
Step 2: Calculate the length per section required
Length = 32.38 / 1.5 = 21.59m
Step 3: Round and select the number of pads
All pads are 0.6m wide; therefore the length of a section needs to be a multiple of 0.6m.
Number of pads required = 21.59 / 0.6 = 35.98
Round up to 36 pads
Length of pad installation = 36 x 0.6 = 21.6m
Step 4: Determine ordering quantities
Since the house will have two sections, the following number of pieces needs to be ordered for the house.
72 x CELdek 7090 1500x600x100
72 x CELdek 70120 600x100x030 (water distribution pads)
It is always advisable to order some extra pieces since pads can easily be damaged during construction
work if care is not taken.

Example 2
A greenhouse is fitted with 20 x Euroemme EM50 extraction fans. Under the particular circumstances
each extracts 35,000m3/h from the structure. How much CELdek pads are required? For practical
reasons the owner of the structure would like to install pads along the one side of the structure, which is
115m long, as in Figure 1D above.
Step 1: Determine the pad area required
Total airflow through the pads = 20 x 35,000 = 700,000m3/h
Pad area required = (0.185 / 1000) x 700,000 = 129.5m2
Step 2: Calculate the length per section required
Height of pads = 129.5 / 115 = 1.13m
Step 3: Round and select the number of pads
All pads are 0.6m wide; therefore the length of a section needs to be a multiple of 0.6m.
Number of pads required = 115 / 0.6 = 191.7
Round down because the pad section can’t be longer than the structure and use 191 pads.

WDP100-AL

Length of pad installation = 191 x 0.6 = 114.6m

For the pad height, round up to the next available height, which is 1.2m
Step 4: Determine ordering quantities
The following number of pieces needs to be ordered for the house.
191 x CELdek 7090 1200x600x100
191 x CELdek 70120 600x100x030 (water distribution pads)
It is always advisable to order some extra pieces since pads can easily be damaged during construction
work if care is not taken.

2.2 Performance of CELdek 7090 100mm thick

Table 1 provides a quick and easy way to determine how much cooling is possible given a specified air
condition before the pads and that the pads are fully wetted.
Example 3
What will the air temperature after the pads be if the outside temperature is 28˚C and the RH is 20%?
Locate the outside temperature (28˚C) on the vertical axis. Go horizontally to the right until the column
with the appropriate RH (20%) is reached. The temperature and RH inside the two cells is what the
expected temperature and RH would be after the pad if the air speed through the pad is 1.5m/s and it is
100mm thick. In this case it will be 18.1˚C and 68% RH.

3 WDP100-AL
The WDP100-AL is a modular system from which many combinations of gutter lengths and pad heights
can be combined. The system consists of four basic building blocks:
• Top and bottom gutter kits
• Gutter side kits
• Watering kits
• Drain kit

Figure 2: Basic building blocks of WDP100-AL

3.1 Compiling a system

Some basic rules apply when a system is compiled to ensure even water distribution over the pads and to
prevent the bottom gutter from overflowing. The maximum length of gutter that can be served by the
watering kits and the drain kit are described in Figure 3 for various installation scenarios.
A system can be compiled in 4 easy steps
Step 1: Calculate the number of top and bottom gutter kits, drain kits and watering kits that are
required
Table 2 can be used for determining these quantities. The various combinations of lengths from 9 to 24m
are listed in the Table along with the number of each type of kit that is required to complete a system for
that length.
For sections longer than 24m, combinations of the lengths listed can be used. To ensure proper
functioning of the system the watering kits should be installed in a way that they serve very close to the
same length of gutter. The same is also true for the drain kits.
Step 2: Calculate the number of gutter side kits that are required
Depending on the installation scenario, it must be decided how many end sections are required.
Step 3: Decide on the placement of the kits
Figure 4 can be used to determine where to connect the watering kits and where to connect the drain kits.
Step 4: Determine ordering quantities
List the number of pad that needs to be ordered.

Example 3
A gutter system with a total length of 87m and a pad height of 1.5m needs to be compiled.
Step 1: Calculate the number of top and bottom gutter kits, drain kits and watering kits are
required
Because the total length is longer than 24m, the most economical solution for watering kits would be to
use Watering kit B that can serve 24m of gutter each.
Number of watering kit Bs required = 87 / 24 = 3.6
Round up and use 4 x Watering kit B
Average length per watering kit = 87 / 4 = 21.75m

16.2 5 0 1 0 1 2 24.0 8 0 0 0 1 2

From Table 2 the closest lengths of section available are 22.2m or 21.6m. Therefore use a combination
of the two lengths (3 x 21.6 + 1 x 22.2 = 87m)
Use Table 2 to determine how many of the various kits are required
Per 21.6m section
6 x 3m top and bottom gutter kits
2 x 1.8m top and bottom gutter kits
1 x Watering kit A
2 x Drain kits
Per 22.2m section
7 x 3m top and bottom gutter kits
1 x 1.2m top and bottom gutter kits
1 x Watering kit A
2 x Drain kits
Since the 87m of gutter will be a continuous section, only 1 x Gutter side kit 1.5m high will be require
Step 3: Decide on the placement of the kits
For the placement of the water inlets, drains and the various lengths of top and bottom gutter, use Figure
4 and treat each section of 21.6 or 22.2m separately. In this way water distribution will be even and the
drains will be able to handle the water flow.
Step 4: Determine ordering quantities
To complete the whole section, the following items need to be ordered
25 x 3m top and bottom gutter kits
2 x 1.8m top and bottom gutter kits
1 x 1.2m top and bottom gutter kits
4 x Watering kit A
8 x Drain kits
