VOCABULARY LOG

READING ONE
1. Achieve: Successfully bring about or reach (a desired objective or result) by
effort, skill, or courage.
Ex: He achieved his ambition to become a press photographer.
2. Acquire: Buy or obtain (an asset or object) for oneself.
Ex: I managed to acquire all the books I needed.
3. Apparently: As far as one knows or can see.
Ex: The child nodded, apparently content with the promise.
4. Approach: Come near or nearer to (someone or something) in distance or time.
Ex: The train approached the main line.
5. Behavior: The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards
others.
Ex: he will vouch for her good behavior.
6. Category: A class or division of people or things regarded as having particular
shared characteristics.
Ex: There are various categories in this contest.
7. Cognition: The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and
understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
Ex: The findings from these experiments have been taken to demonstrate the
role of cognition in the experience of emotion.
8. Controversy: Prolonged public disagreement or heated discussion.
Ex: The design of the building has caused controversy
9. Obvious: Easily perceived or understood; clear, self-evident, or apparent.
Ex: Unemployment has been the most obvious cost of the recession.
10. Perception: The ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the
senses.
Ex: People who have extrasensory perception are said to be psychic.
11. Unconscious: Not awake and aware of and responding to one's environment.
Ex: My body took most of the impact and I knocked myself unconscious.
12. Unique: Being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else.
Ex: All apartments are individually designed to give a unique look and feel to
each property.

READING TWO
13. Confront: Come face to face with (someone) with hostile or argumentative
intent
Ex: She confronts him and their argument leads to a seemingly final split.
14. Discern: Recognize or find out.
Ex: Between the two names, no effective difference can be discerned.
15. Sensory: Relating to sensation or the physical senses; transmitted or
perceived by the senses.
Ex: Is it a sport that for you has sensory pleasures that aren't reliant on sight?
16. Trait: A distinguishing quality or characteristic, typically one belonging
to a person.
Ex: It could take you years to really know a city, but you can pick up on its
character traits in about an hour.
17. Viable: Capable of working successfully; feasible.
Ex: A mural for the walls became a more permanent and viable alternative.
