THE COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH TO FLT


The communicative approach appeared in the 1970s as a reaction to audio-lingual
methods (more attention to structure than to its function). Noam Chomsky:
sentences aren't learned by imitation & repetition, they are generated from the
learner's competence.  Student's should be encouraged to use their innate &
creative abilities.
Communicative activities: interactive, unpredictable, within a context, authentic.
