SALVIA - M

Instructions for Use

Portable, battery operated device

Indicator of acupuncture points

1
Basic Description of the Device

Salvia-M is a battery-operated device derived from a similar line of devices made by foreign
manufacturers. Its simple and lightweight design means high portability and efficient storage.
Salvia – M also boasts easy maintenance, a user friendly concept, and top performance.
Function: portable, battery operated indicator of acupuncture points in combination with
discharging dish to enable offset of different charges of static electricity between the patient
and user/operating staff.

1. Description of controls

 (1) POWER (yellow LED indicating light) indicates the level of the
batteries. If the control LED flashes faintly or stops flashing completely,
the batteries should be replaced.
 (2) GAIN (large outer knob) is used to adjust the device’s sensitivity to the
surface resistance of the skin. (Skin resistance depends on humidity.) The
arrow on the knob pointing to 1 indicates the lowest sensitivity of the
device. When the arrow points to 9, the device is set at maximum
sensitivity. By turning the GAIN knob, the range of sensitivity
(intensification) changes at a ratio of approximately 1:100.
 (3) VOLUME (small inner knob) regulates the loudness of the audio
signal. (Testing is accompanied by an audio signal whose pitch varies
according to the value indicated by the device (4). This knob also serves
to switch the device on and off. The device is off when the knob is set in
position 1.
 (4) INDICATOR (meter): The gauge of the meter, ranging from 0 to 100, is
simply for a rough reference or orientation. The units on the scale (A)
have no actual importance for testing.

2. Device accessories

The accessories include a silver-coated cylindrical electrode with a black cable to

be connected to the black input socket, and a probe with silver-coated
semispherical tip (diameter 3 mm) with a red cable to be connected to the red
input socket. The output plugs of both the electrode and the probe comply with
safety standards. The input sockets for the probe and the electrode comply with
safety standards and are located on the right side panel of the device.

3. Checking the device before testing

 Before starting the testing, the zero deviation of the meter (4) must be checked. If
there is any deviation from zero, it can be corrected by turning the black bolt located
in the center of the bottom part of the meter.
 Switch the device on. If the probe and the electrode are disconnected, the
needle of the meter should not deviate from the zero position.
 Connect the electrode and the probe. Short circuit the probe with the
electrode. The sensitivity of the device should be adjustable using the
GAIN knob between the values 1-3, such that the meter shows full
deviation 100.
The device must be checked before starting each new testing.

2
4. Putting the device into operation

To prepare the device for testing, insert the input plugs of the testing probe and of the
indifferent cylindrical electrode into the proper output sockets on the device, according to the
color of the cables.
Put the device into operation by turning knob (3). The function of the device is indicated by
the flashing of LED indicating light (1).
To increase the audio signal (to provide the examiner with a rough reference), continue
turning knob (3). The pitch of the tone follows the deviation of the needle during testing, and
is useful when the operator is not able to read the deviation of the needle.
Prior to each testing, the device should be checked as specified in section 4. of the
Instructions for Use.

5. Working with the device

Put the device into operation and after checking the device let the patient to hold firmly the
cylindrical electrode in the hand. User/staff locates the acupuncture points by using the
probe with semispherical tip. For proper location set the approximate sensitivity using the
sensitivity regulation control (2). This sensitivity may differ; it depends on the skin resistance,
sweat, air humidity, ambient temperature and other influences.
After the probe comes into contact with patient´s skin the device stops the “ticking” and starts
to produce continuous sound and the pitch of the tone is proportional to the skin resistance.
This enables to the operator to work without watching the indicator needle (4).
The discharging dish placed on the top panel of device allows discharging the different static
charge between the patient, operator and acupuncture needles before their application.

WARNING!!! The discharging dish in itself without sterile inset (not included) is not intended
to insert the sterile material directly in!
The dish is only to insert inside another metallic dish (inset) with the sterile material i.e.
sterile acupuncture needles.
Taking out the acupuncture needles from the sterile metallic inset the electrical charge
comes to be balanced and the painful side-effects of leveling the electric charge by sparkles
are exterminated.
Another possibility is that the operator seizing the acupuncture needle gets into a contact
with the discharging dish by his second hand before acupuncture needle application.
The patient must hold the indifferent electrode in the hand in both cases.
Owing to the discharging dish the electrical charge comes to be balanced and the painful
side-effects of leveling the electric charge by sparkles are exterminated.

6. Maintenance and cleaning

The maintenance of the device is simple.

 As the values tested are not absolute values and we read only relative values, the
level of battery discharge is not important. The batteries should be replaced when the
device cannot be put into operation or when the LED control (1) is fading. Only
batteries recommended by the manufacturer should be used, see operating
instructions, section 9.
 After prolonged use of the probe and the electrode, the optical properties of their
surfaces may become dull. Silver chemical compounds, characterized by a black veil
over the silver surface, are the cause of this dulling and can be removed with
common silver cleaners. After cleaning, polish the surface with a soft cloth dampened
with ethanol.
 The discharging dish should be cleaned only with ethanol.
3
 Only ethanol should be used for surface cleaning of the device. Make sure that the
device has been switched off and the testing cables disconnected before you start
surface cleaning. The frequency of cleaning is to be decided upon by the operators.
Use of other cleaners is not recommended.
 Do not use any abrasives for cleaning!
 For sanitary reasons, the electrode and the probe should be
disinfected after each use, for example with cotton-wool balls
soaked in ethanol, or other disinfecting agent. Disconnect the
electrodes and turn off the device prior to disinfection!
 Neither the probe nor the electrode has been designed for thermal
sterilization, or for submersing in a liquid.

7. Important!

 The device should only be operated by a trained individual.

 Do not remove the cover. Do not make any alterations or modifications to the device.
 The operator must carry out regular checks of the device in accordance with section
4, including the inspection of the testing cables. If any defects are found, the device
should be sent for repair to the manufacturer’s service center or to any service center
authorized by the manufacturer for that purpose.
 The material used in the electrode and the probes (the silver-coated copper and zinc
alloy) is crucial for the proper functioning of the device. The electrode and the probe
should be used with an individual for the shortest possible time needed. They are not
intended for other than short-term application.
 The electrodes should always be applied to absolutely intact skin.
 Neither the electrode nor the probe has been designed to be cleaned and/or
disinfected by immersion into a liquid.

8. Technical parameters

a) Operating conditions
