Analysis
The curve was generated by determining the temperature at which the partially miscible liquids (Phenol and
water) becomes completely miscible in varying concentrations of phenol and water. In the region above the
curve, it was observed that the liquids are miscible, and in the region below the curve, turbidty was
observed. This indicates that the points at the curve are the temperatures at which the number of phases
change at a given concentration. The convex shape of the curve shows that the solubility of phenol in water
increases with temperature. Moreover, the maximum point of the curve is 65.5 ˚C; this temperature called
the upper consolute temperature (Tuc), beyond this temperature, it is expected that the liquids are
completely miscible in all proportions.
