Chapter I

The Problem and its Background

Background of the Study

A sari-sari store, or neighborhood sundry store, is a convenience store found in

the Philippines. The word sari-sari is Tagalog meaning "variety" or "sundry". Such stores form an

important economic and social location in a Filipino community and is ubiquitous in

neighborhoods and streets. Sari-sari stores tend to be family-run and privately owned operating

within the shopkeeper's residence. Commodities are displayed in a large screen-covered or metal

barred window in front of the shop. Candies in recycled jars, canned goods and cigarettes are

displayed while cooking oil, salt and sugar are stored at the back of the shop. Prepaid mobile

phone credits are provided. The sari-sari store operates with a small revolving fund, and generally

doesn't provide perishable goods requiring refrigeration. The few that do, have refrigerators to

store soft drinks, beers and bottled water.

Craving about the unceasing extension of Sari -sari Store of sole proprietorship in many business

areas in the Philippines. The more it seen in many places, the more we convince to know about the

business. It is as if appetite for more good business, for better starting of business especially when

it operate by one owner only going to be satisfied. This activity is gathering information

about the continuous expansion of convenience as business of many Filipino in our country.

Sari-sari store become Philippine phenomenon common business for its very impressive or

popularity ability that provides household goods at afford ably-portioned "quantities and

sometimes even on credit but still you need to know to whom, how many times and up
to how much amount. Another thing is what place you must have and how much capital do

you need and what product you should sell.

This sari-sari store is a small convenience store version in Malabon. It served as

the pantry extension of every household. Because any missing essential goods from

basic food items like coffee, milk and sugar, to other necessities like soaps, shampoo

and toothpaste is easily purchased from the nearby sari-sari store at affordably portioned

quantities.

The researchers aim to investigate the struggles and triumphs of a sari-sari store. In this

study we will research on what are the struggles that a sari-sari store owner faced and what are the

strategies that the owner used to cope with it.

Statement of the Problem

The major problems of this study aims to investigate the struggles and triumphs in sales

and management of a sari-sari store.

Specifically, it seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What are your struggles in sales and management in your sari-sari store?

2. How do you handle your struggles in management and sales?

3. What are your triumphs in your sari-sari store?

4. What advice can you give to those people who want to start a business like sari-sari store?
Scope and Delimitation

The researchers will focus on the store owners of sari-sari stores around Panghulo,

Malabon City. The researchers will conduct a survey and interviews with at least (10) ten store

owners to know their struggles and triumphs in sales and management.

Significance of the study

The researcher’s aim to determine the struggles and triumphs of a sari-sari store in sales

and management. This study will benefits the following:

For the ABM students to give them ideas what does being a sari-sari store owner feels

like. This study may also help them know what are the possible problems that they may

encountered when starting a sari-sari store business.

For the teachers to be able to give the students some tips on how to properly manage a

sari-sari store.

For the sari-sari store owners to help them improve their skills in maintaining and

improving the sales of their business.

For the future researchers for them to study and research more about the topic more

than we have done.

Management – the process of dealing with or controlling things or people

Owner – It refers to the owners of the sari-sari stores and the respondents of the study.

Sales – the exchange of a commodity for money; the action of selling something

Strategies – a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim

Struggles – make forceful or violent efforts to get free of restraint or constriction

Sundry – various items not important enough to be mentioned individually

Triumphs – a great victory or achievement in having sari-sari store
