EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The Emergency Unit (ER) is one part of the hospital that provides early
treatment for patients suffering from illness and injury, which can threaten its survival.
In the ER can be found doctors from various specialties along with a number of nurses
and also physician assistant. Upon arrival at the ER, patients usually undergo the first
sorting, anamnesis to help determine the nature and severity of the illness. Patients with
serious illness usually get more visite by a doctor than those whose illness is not so
severe. After initial assessment and treatment, the patient may be referred to the
hospital, stabilized and transferred to another hospital for various reasons, or excluded.
Most ER is open 24 hours, although at night the number of staff there will be less.

The emergency department is sometimes referred to as casualty, accident, and

emergency or A&E. If an ambulance is needed you can call 999, the emergency phone
number in England. Generally, you should go to the emergency department only in
emergencies such as loss of consciousness, a very serious state of confusion, persistent
severe chest pain or breathing difficulties. Once you're in the emergency department, a
doctor or nurse will assess your condition and decide on further action. You may have
to wait a short while before you are seen. There is an operational standard in place for

four hours of arrival, to help ensure that the care is timely.
