8th Grade English Language Arts
During my 9 week experience in an 8th grade ELA class, I was able
to implement a rigorous and engaging curriculum. Every week
the English department held a meeting for planning and
discussion revolving around the material. When class started, I
was able to teach this material to an inquisitive group of
students. Pacing, differential instruction, and classroom
management were some of the most important areas of teaching
I learned from my host teacher. Together, we were able to keep
the students engaged through whole group and small group
discussion, individual practice, modeling new material, and
realistic assignments. Students were enthusiastic about the
material and responded extremely well to classroom activities.
7th Grade Science
My 8 week experience in a 7th grade science class was extremely
beneficial to my teaching career. I was able to observe and teach
research-based techniques that promoted students becoming
accountable for their learning. Our lessons and tests were based
off of Standard Based Learning techniques. Our students were
able to see what standard they were struggling with, retake that
specific standard, and then reflect upon the process in their
Learning Journal. They documented their score, their strengths
and weaknesses, and how they could improve. Student
achievement had increased since the previous year due to this
teaching method.
